    • The invention describes an electrical machine having an armature with armature slots for accommodating armature coils. At least one armature coil is formed from two coil elements which are arranged symmetrically with respect to one another in relation to an axis of symmetry, which runs through the center-point of the armature shaft. The coil elements are connected to two adjacent commutator laminates of a commutator. A first brush, a second brush and a third brush bear against the commutator in a manner such that they can slide. The second brush interacts with the first brush or the third brush. The third brush is arranged in relation to the two coil elements in such a way that, when the two adjacent commutator laminates come into contact with one another, the third brush and the center-point of the armature shaft form an axis which has an angle of 90 DEG−(180 DEG/number of laminates)−(180 DEG/3×number of laminates) up to 90 DEG+(180 DEG/number of laminates)+(180 DEG/3×number of laminates) in relation to the axis of symmetry of the two coil elements.

    • A two-stage eutectic metal brush assembly having a slip ring rigidly coupled to a shaft, the slip ring being electrically coupled to first voltage polarity. At least one brush is rigidly coupled to a second ring and slidingly engaged to the slip ring. Eutectic metal at least partially fills an annulus between the second ring and a stationary ring. At least one conductor is rigidly coupled to the stationary ring and electrically coupled to a second voltage polarity. Electrical continuity is maintained between the first voltage polarity and the second voltage polarity. Periodic rotational motion is present between the stationary ring and the second ring. Periodic rotational motion is also present between the brush and the slip ring.

    • An improved electrical commutator which is particularly useful in a vehicle steering wheel system, includes sets of wire brushes or fingers on a first plate. The wire brushes or fingers contact plural co-planar rings on a second plate. The two plates rotate relative to each other. The wire brushes or fingers decrease the likelihood that any one of the sets will have a short circuit. Should any one of the wires bend, break, or come out of contact with its associated contact ring, there is a likelihood that at least several of the other wires will remain in contact. In addition, there are plural sets of wire brushes or fingers associated with each of the contact rings, again increasing the likelihood that the circuit will remain intact. In other features, the plural sets may be mounted such that circumferentially spaced ones of the sets face opposed directions. In this way, there is no difference in the resistance to rotation, or the quality of the electrical communication, when the wheel is turned either clockwise or counter-clockwise.
