    • In an exemplary embodiment an ultrasonic head comprises at least one transducer element which, possibly via a liquid precursory path, transmits ultrasonic signals and receives echo signals. It is the object of the disclosure to design the applicator such that it is simply and rapidly adjustable to variable depth scanning. In accordance with the disclosure this object is achieved in that the liquid precursory path has the form of a sack, containing the liquid, which sack is capable of being coupled with the transducer element or elements on the ultrasonic head in the manner of a spacer by a readily detachable mounting arrangement.

    • A tuned acoustic directional transducer for transmitting and receiving airborne sound, which provides enhanced efficiency and reduced cost without undue narrowing of bandwidth, makes use of an acoustic transducer element (2) coupled to a plate (10) having a higher order flexural mode resonance at approximately the desired frequency of operation, the plate being coupled to the air through low-hysteresis acoustic propagation material having an acoustic impedance much less than that of the plate and much greater than that of the air. The material is disposed so that in the desired direction of propagation there is no substantial reduction of sound intensity in the far field resulting from cancellation occasioned by interaction of sound radiated from adjacent antinodal zones. Preferably the thickness of the material is such that it acts as an efficient acoustic impedance matching transformer. Preferably, the transducer element is piezoelectric and coupled to the center of a circular plate to which the coupling material is applied in rings (16, 18, 20).

    • A coupling ring is bonded onto the opposite ends of a ferroelectric stack ving substantially the same thermal expansion coefficient as the stack. A thin film of silicone compound is wiped onto the axially exposed surfaces of the rings and surfaces provided in a head and a tail mass are configured to mate with them. A plurality of microspheres are mixed uniformly through a liquid adhesive and this mixture is coated onto the suitably shaped surfaces on the head and tail mass. A stress rod reaching between the head and tail mass axially compresses the ferroelectric stack and excess adhesive mixture is squeezed from between the mating surfaces. The thickness of the liquid adhesive is restricted to the diameter of the microspheres to ensure a high impedance match and upon applying the proper amount of heat, rigid joints are set up between the now hardened adhesive and the head and tail mass. Nonrigid joints or radially displaceable are created across the silicone compound films to create an optimum impedance match between the ferroelectric stack and the masses and to prevent the transfer of self-destructive tensile strains as the head and tail masses change dimensions in response to changing ambient temperatures.

    • A piezoelectric crystal has a concave active surface and a high acoustical impedance. A flat layer of molded material having a low acoustical impedance faces the active surface of the crystal to form a space therebetween. An intermediate layer of molded material having an intermediate acoustical impedance fills the space between the crystal and the flat layer. Preferably, the intermediate material has a sonic velocity near that of water, and the flat layer has a uniform thickness of approximately 1/4 of the average wavelength of the ultrasonic energy emitted by the crystal. A housing supports the crystal, the flat layer, and the intermediate layer.
