    • An improved FM companding communication system is disclosed in which noise bursts and pops in the audio output of the receiver, due to weak and Rayleigh-faded signals, are minimized by selectively attenuating the audio signal in the receiver prior to expansion. The amount and rate of attenuation for the noise reduction circuits is determined by a control signal derived from either the average discriminator noise at frequencies above 3 kHz, or from a received RF signal strength indicator, or a combination of both. The audio output is attenuated during weak signals or Rayleigh fades only when the attenuation control signal increases above a predetermined signal-to-noise ratio threshold. Preferably, attenuation increases at a rate greater than the decrease in the received signal strength. The invention includes a circuit for modifying the expansion characteristics of the expandor to minimize signal clipping in the output audio stage of the receiver due to limited dynamic range.

    • A load pull isolation switch for a signal source is discolsed which substantially eliminates the effects of load pull caused by a variable impedance load when selectively coupled and decoupled to a signal source. By judiciously choosing the timing criteria for activating the isolation switch, convention load pull isolation stages are eliminated.In another embodiment, the load pull isolation switch is disclosed as incorporated in a mobile radio having a fast locking synthesizer. The timing of the operation of the isolation switch is controlled by a microprocessor-controller which not only handles data and control functions for the mobile radio, but also has the necessary method steps incorporated as software within the microprocessor-controller. Such an arrangement is useful for sending voice or data as in a time division multiplex system.

    • To a standard AM radio receiver there is connected an impulse-noise suppression system comprising a preliminary blanking gate adapted for connecting to and for interrupting the AM-modulated signal path at the input of the IF section, and an audio blanking gate adapted for interrupting the audio circuit. Both blanking circuits detect impulse noise at the RF amplifier and with appropriate delays blank both points. Audio blanking masks the audio disturbance caused by the blanking in the AM-modulated-signal path. Audio blanking time is preferably from 2 to 3 times the duration of the blanking of the AM-modulated-signal path and is thus kept very short causing a minimum interruption of the wanted audio signal. Associated with the audio-signal-path blanking circuit is a sample and hold circuit for smoothing the blanked audio signal and virtually eliminating an audio disturbance or noise that is otherwise generated by the audio blanking circuit itself.

    • For elimination of pulse type interference in an FM receiver by intermittent blanking of the received signal while interfering pulses are present and substitution of a synthetic signal during the blanking intervals, the synthetic signal substituted during the blanking intervals is produced by interpolation using finite duration impulse response digital filters, instead of using the last undisturbed value of the received signal modified by integration of its last value of rate of change with respect to time. The determination of the blanking interval is optimized by reference to the maximum and minimum peak values of the output of an AM detector of the received signal and comparing an interference signal magnitude thus obtained with a threshold value of the interference signal, so as to define the blanking interval as the interval during which the interference signal exceeds the reference signal value. The interference signal compared with the reference value is produced by computing the sum and product of the maximum and minimum peak values, adding the product to the output of the squarer operating on the output of the AM demodulator, multiplying the sum of the maximum and minimum peak values by the AM demodulator output, dividing the product plus squarer sum by the multiplied output of the AM demodulator, forming the arc cosine of the output of the divider and then differentiating the arc cosine value.
