    • A program replacing method and apparatus replaces a program in a broadcast receiving terminal apparatus. A first program is registered so that message transmission is enabled between the first program and a POD (Point of Deployment), the first program having an identifier identifying a program type of the first program. If a second program exists in a broadcast receiving terminal apparatus, the second program is notified that message transmission between the second program and the POD is to be terminated. The method receives approval for terminating the message transmission between the second program and the POD, from the second program, terminates the message transmission between the second program and the POD, and notifies the first program that message transmission between the first program and the POD has been enabled.

    • An apparatus for synchronizing data retrieval is described. The apparatus comprises a storage media storing data, a storage control device coupled to the storage media for retrieving the data from the storage media, memory coupled to the storage control device for storing the data; and a scheduling unit coupled to the memory for scheduling retrieval of the data from the storage media before a specified time. A storage media for storing computer instructions is also described. The storage media comprises a first plurality of processor executable instructions for instructing a computer system to schedule retrieval of data from a storage device before a specified time, a second plurality of processor executable instructions for instructing the computer system to retrieve the data from the storage device before the specified time has elapsed, a third plurality of processor executable instructions for instructing the computer system to store the data from the storage device into memory, and a fourth plurality of processor executable instructions for instructing the computer system to process the data from the memory. A method for synchronizing data retrieval in a data processing system is also described. The method comprises determining a specified time for retrieving the data from a storage media, scheduling retrieval of the data from the storage media before the specified time, retrieving the data from the storage media before the specified time has elapsed, and processing the data from the storage media.

    • An audio data transmission system encodes audio files into individual audio data blocks which contain a variable number bits of digital audio data that were sampled at a selectable sample rate. The number of bits of digital data and the input sampling rate are scaleable to produce an encoded bit stream bit rate that is less than or equal to an effective operational bit rate of a recipient's modem. The audio data transmission system uses computing units which are designed to select an appropriate combination of block size and input sampling rate to maximize the available bandwidth of the receiving modem. For example, if the modem connection speed for one modem is 14.4 kbps, a version of the audio data compressed at 13000 bits/s might be sent to the recipient; if the modem connection speed for another modem is 28.8 kbps, a version of the audio data compressed at 24255 bits/s might be sent to the receiver. The audio data blocks are then transmitted at the encoded bit stream bit rate to the intended recipient's modem. The audio data blocks are decoded at the recipient to reconstruct the audio file and immediately play the audio file as it is received. The audio data transmission system can be implemented in online service systems, ITV systems, computer data network systems, and communication systems.

    • A video telecommunication server for use in providing a fast scan of a video telecommunication comprises a bitstream store for receiving and storing a coded input video telecommunication digital bitstream. The server further comprises a video decoder for decoding the received digital video bitstream and, in one embodiment, a representation of every nth frame of said decoded digital video signal is stored in a frame store depending on a desired speed-up rate, where n is greater than one. A video encoder reencodes the stored video telecommunication predictively such that every nth frame is predicted based on the preceding frame. A fast scan digital video bitstream is generated for output by the video encoder that represents the fast scan video telecommunication, either in a fast forward or fast reverse direction. A receiver for receiving a control input may receive data representing the direction of fast scan and the speed-up rate. In further embodiments, the video encoder comprises an intra frame encoder or provides for requesting intra frames from a transmitting video encoder at periodic intervals.
