    • Piezoelectric actuators of the type comprising a stack of layers of ferroelectric material and intervening electrodes which extend only part-way across the adjacent ferroelectric layers suffer differential remanent stress when electric fields are applied across the layers. To overcome this, a tensile stress is applied to the actuator along an axis substantially perpendicular to the layers of piezoelectric material in the actuator, which tensile stress is sufficient to mechanically align the dipoles, thus giving rise to a remanent strain which is uniform throughout the actuator. The actuator is advantageously heated while the tensile stress is applied, so as to increase the difference between the tensile strength of the material and the applied tensile stress. An alternative arrangement involves subjecting the actuator to a multidirectional stress and reducing the stress along the axis substantially perpendicular to the layers of piezoelectric material in the actuator. The entire process is performed on completed actuators. Under suitable temperature and load conditions no tensile margin fractures form and electrode tip discontinuity is reduced.

    • An injection device for administering a reagent into an exhaust passage of an internal combustion engine, the injection device having an axis along its length and comprising an outwardly opening valve member having a seating surface which is engageable with a valve seating region. A seating member provided with an internal bore which defines the valve seating region, wherein the internal bore further defines a flow re-directing region downstream of the valve seating region. The seating member has an end face provided with a feature which intersects with at least a portion of the flow re-directing region to define, together with the flow re-directing region, a spray path for reagent exiting the injection device when the valve member is moved outwardly from the bore away from the valve seating region. The spray path has a variable spray angle, relative to the axis, around the circumference of the valve seating region.

    • A fuel pump is provided for pressurising fuel in a high-pressure fuel injection system. The fuel pump comprises a pump head, a pumping element, a frame and a casing. The pump head has a pumping chamber that is arranged to receive fuel to be pressurised. The pumping element is arranged to reciprocate responsive to movement of a driving element, the pumping element defining, in part, the pumping chamber so that, in use, as the pumping element reciprocates, a force, transferred from the driving element, is applied to the fuel within the pumping chamber to pressurise the fuel. The frame is arranged to support the driving element and the pump head. The casing defines an internal volume for containing fluid, wherein at least a part of the frame, at least a part of the drive element, and at least a part of the pumping element are received in the casing.
