    • A system and method of transmitting data via a computer network to a plurality of end-users. Transmission of successive data units may be prompted by human-operated and/or automated central control. Successive arrays of data units may be transmitted over a plurality of channels, in parallel. Each end-user chooses which channel or channels to receive and may change channels at will. Transmission of successive arrays may coincide with successive occurrences during the course of a live event. Data units also may be transmitted over one or more channels asynchronously with transmissions over other channels. Controller-prompted transmissions, received passively by end-users, also may be integrated with a facility for end-users to browse data sources in a self-directed sequence and pace.

    • A turbo machine includes a housing having a bearing compartment for receiving lubrication. The housing also provides a buffer compartment for receiving air, for example, compressor bleed air. A turbine shaft is supported within the housing on a bearing for rotation relative to the housing. The bearing is arranged within the bearing compartment. A seal is arranged between the turbine shaft and the housing and separates the bearing and buffer compartments. The seal includes opposing lubrication and air sides that are respectively exposed to the bearing and buffer compartments. The buffer tube is fluidly connected to a body of the buffer compartment. A buffer tube introduces flow generally tangential to an inner surface of the body for generating a swirl within the body. The buffer tube includes a velocity control device such a venturi arranged at an exit of the tube to control the velocity of the flow entering the body. An orifice plate is arranged upstream from the venturi to control the flow to a desired flow rate. The swirling flow within the body at the desired flow rate and velocity provides a uniform pressure gradient at idle having a large enough pressure magnitude to create the desired pressure differential across the seal. The increased pressure in the buffer compartment in the vicinity of the seal prevents leakage of lubricant past the seal at idle.

    • The system for providing location independent uniform service access for communication subscribers provides the capability to dynamically translate the local communications access paradigms to enable the subscriber to access the desired communications services without manually translating these access modalities from those known by the subscriber in their home service area to those used in this new locale. The implementation of the present system for providing location independent uniform service access for communication subscribers is illustrated as being resident in the subscriber's communication network access device. For example, the subscriber's wireless communication device can be equipped with an automated location determining capability, such as a Global Positioning System (GPS), or the location information can be obtained from the wireless base station, and a translation data base that maps the subscriber's local communications access paradigms into those corresponding communications access paradigms in use in the subscriber's present location. The subscriber's wireless communication device responds to the subscriber's data input indicative of an access to a desired communications service by translating the input data into the data script that corresponds to the communications access paradigm in use at the present location for the desired communications service.

    • The present multi-media message storage system functions to provide the user with a playback that represents a capsulization of the content of the stored message to thereby enable the user to determine whether the stored message contains sufficient information that warrants the user playing back the entirety of the message. The summary consists of content descriptive information that is excerpted from the body of the message and played back to the user in a form that differs from that used to store the received message. This feature enables a multi-media message storage system to store and retrieve text messages for a user in an efficient manner, thereby enabling the multi-media message storage system to function as a multi-media mail system.
