    • A magnetic angular-position sensor is mounted between two carrier elements that are movable in rotation relative to each other about an axis of rotation. The sensor has firstly a magnetic body defining a working zone in which there extends a magnetic field having field lines perpendicular to the axis of rotation, and secondly a detector member having at least one probe extending in the working zone of the magnetic member in order to provide a signal as a function of the angular orientation of the probe relative to the field lines in the working zone. The magnetic member has two parallel magnet segments and two elongate pole pieces of ferromagnetic material extending perpendicularly to the magnet segments and covering the ends thereof.

    • The invention relates to a dual-coil electromagnetic valve actuator having a permanent magnet and an actuator member (11) movable between two extreme positions under the effect of a resilient member and two electromagnets each comprising a core having a T-shaped first core portion (18) with a base (19) connected to a central branch (20) with a coil (21) disposed thereabout, the first core portion (18) being placed in a U-shaped second core portion (22) having a base (23) connected to outer branches (24) which extend parallel to the central branch (20) of the first core portion (18), a permanent magnet (25) being interposed between the base of the first core portion (18) and the base of the second core portion (22). In at least one of the electromagnets, the base (19) of the T-shaped first core portion (18) extends so as to co-operate with the outer branches (24) of the U-shaped second core portion (22) to present airgaps (e) of size much smaller than a distance between the base (19) of the T-shaped first core portion and the base (23) of the U-shaped second core portion.

    • A piston ring for use in a piston of an internal combustion engine comprises a base material of a first hardness formed into a ring, and a secondary material of a second hardness formed by selective and superficial heat treatment of an outer portion of the base material. At least one outer surface of the ring is selectively and superficially heat treated in one of a variety of ways to form an austenitic metal layer about 100 &mgr;m thick on the surface of the ring. The ring is then rapidly cooled in an appropriate environment, resulting in the transformation of the austenitic compound into a martensitic compound adjacent the base material at the point of heat treatment. Preferably, the martensitic metal has a hardness range of 800 to 1000 HV (Vickers Hardness scale) measured at a load of 100 grams.
