    • A reliable and cost-efficient direct drive force feedback motor is suitable for joystick applications, allowing multiple degrees of output freedom, requiring no coil commutation, and permitting compact packaging. A multiple degree-of-freedom motor consistent with the invention comprises an output shaft, a stator, and a rotor. The stator comprises first and second lamination stacks, each lamination stack having an interior curved surface and a coil wound thereon, the lamination stacks being disposed adjacent the output shaft. The rotor is fixed to the output shaft and movably supported adjacent the stator with an air gap disposed between the rotor and the stator, the rotor including at least one magnet disposed thereon and being movable along the interior curved surface of the lamination stacks in directions defining at least first and second degrees of freedom. Energization of the coil of the first lamination stack establishes a first magnetic field to urge the output shaft to rotate in a first plane, and energization of the coil of the second lamination stack establishes a second magnetic field to urge the output shaft to rotate in a second plane substantially orthogonal to the first plane.

    • A power supply of the present invention comprises a transducer having a transducer and a voltage regulator. The transducer is coupled to an electrically non-conductive medium, which may be a light pipe. The electrically non-conductive medium is coupled to a non-electrical energy source such as a light source and the non-electrical energy source communicates energy to the transducer via said electrically non-conductive medium. The transducer converts the received light energy to electrical energy, which is supplied to a voltage regulator. The voltage regulator has a regulator ground, regulator output, and regulator input. The regulator input is electrically coupled to the transducer output and the regulator ground is electrically coupled to a live conductor of a medium voltage power line. The regulator output therefore provides an output voltage that is ground referenced to the live conductor of the medium voltage power line.

    • A smaller sized flip dot display utilizes a magnetically actuated pixel that rotates between two orientations. The orientations display two different optical states. A simulated dot matrix design improves the aesthetics and consumer appeal, and also permits a flip dot display capable of producing a positive contrast display image with darker colored “ON” pixels contrasting with brighter background and “OFF” pixels by reducing the visibility of the spacing gap between each rotating pixel and the surrounding background. An interwoven configuration of magnetic actuators with a coil around each arm of a U-shaped core may result in lower power consumption, low production cost, and small size required for use in consumer and small mobile devices such as watches and mobile phones.
