    • Water-based paints having improved properties and application characteristics are disclosed. The paint, exclusive of optional components such as pigments, particulate fillers and catalysts, comprises a liquid, continuous aqueous phase. About 30 to about 50 percent by weight of this phase exclusive of the aforecited optional components, is made up of a mixture of (a) an amino resin crosslinking agent; (b) a mixture of at least two copolymers of acrylic monomers; and (c) an amine. The balance is water or, in certain embodiments, water and an organic solvent. The mixture of copolymers comprises (1) about 5 to about 50, preferably about 10 to about 30, parts by weight of a ''''solution polymer,'''' i.e., a carboxyfunctional copolymer of acrylic monomers that (i) is at least partially neutralized with an amine, (ii) is soluble in said aqueous phase, (iii) has average molecular weight (Mn) in the range of about 3,000 to about 20,000, and (iv) has Tg in the range of -15* to 50*C., and (2) about 50 to about 95, preferably about 70 to about 90, parts by weight of an ''''emulsion polymer,'''' i.e., a copolymer of acrylic monomers having carboxy, hydroxy or carboxy and hydroxy functionality that (i) is essentially insoluble in said continuous phase, (ii) has average molecular weight (Mn) in the range of about 3,000 to about 20,000 and (iii) has Tg of -15* to 50*C. The amino resin crosslinking agent is present in an amount in the range of about 15 to about 35 weight percent of the sum of the weight of solution polymer and the weight of emulsion polymer. The amine is a water-soluble amine and is present in an amount sufficient to solubilize the solution polymer in the aqueous phase at a pH range of about 7 to about 10, most commonly in the range of about 7.1 to about 8.5. The invention claimed is directed to a method for producing such paints wherein watersoluble, carboxy-functional, acrylic copolymer is employed as a stabilizer polymer in emulsion polymerization therein.

    • An improved fuel sender mechanism for indicating the level of fuel in a fuel tank of a motor vehicle. The fuel sender is of the type having a tubular device extending from the exterior to the interior of the fuel tank to permit fuel to be withdrawn from the tank through the tubular device. A variable resistance device, secured to the tubular device, is controlled by a float mechanism that changes in position as a function of the fuel level in the fuel tank. The improvement comprises the addition of a flexible joint in the tubular device for the purpose of insuring that the fuel intake end of the tubular device is in contact with the bottom of the fuel tank, thereby, to permit precise location of the variable resistance device and the float mechanism controlling it.

    • Powder coating compositions are disclosed which comprise a blend of coreactable, thermosettable copolymers each of which have at least two different functional groups. Ordinarily, these polymers will be qualitatively difunctional, although they may contain more than two different functional groups, and quantitatively polyfunctional. At least one of the copolymers has epoxy functionality as one of its two or more different functionalities. Thus, in the preferred embodiments, the first copolymer of the blend has epoxy functionality and a second functionality selected from amide functionality, anhydride functionality and hydroxy functionality and is crosslinkable with the second copolymer through at least two different types of functional groups on the first copolymer. The second copolymer also is crosslinkable with the first copolymer through at least two different types of functional groups on the second copolymer and may be (a) anhydride functional and carboxy functional, (b) carboxy functional and amide functional, (c) carboxy functional and hydroxy functional, (d) epoxy functional and amide functional or (e) epoxy functional and anhydride functional. The second copolymer is advantageously employed in an amount such that its functionality of greatest concentration provides about 0.3 to about 1.2 functional groups per functional group on the first copolymer and the functionality of lesser concentration provides about 0.1 to about 0.4 functional groups per functional group on the first copolymer.

    • A method of cutting and separating portions of a glass bracket, and the apparatus for carrying out the method.
