    • An operating system software architecture, implemented in an object-oriented design, supports and processes color. The object-oriented design has two levels, one being a class (TColor) defining a virtual abstract base class and being a container class containing calibrated colors, the other being a class (TDeviceColor) defining a virtual abstract base class and a container class containing uncalibrated colors. Several calibrated color classes including a class (TXYZColor) defining XYZ color space descend directly from class (TColor), several uncalibrated color classes including a class (TRGBColor) descending directly from class (TDeviceColor), a class (TColorGamut) storing color gamut information of peripheral devices that may interface with the architecture, and a class (TColorProfile) storing tonal reproduction curves of the peripheral devices provide data structures, together with method functions for various color processing. The architecture is extensible to add new color classes as new color models and devices are developed, to add new color matching algorithms as desired, allows users to work in color space of their choice, and provides for color matching amongst any peripheral devices interfacing with the architecture.

    • The invention is a translation framework which performs data conversions in an object oriented environment from clipboards, drag, and drop tend entire files and entire objects into compound documents. There are three primary classes: the translator, the translator surrogates, and the translation query. Translators are heavy objects that may include the translator's shared library and supporting libraries. The framework uses light weight surrogate translators as stand-ins for translators. The surrogates do not pull in the translators unless there is a request to do an actual translation. When a translation is requested, the translator must be streamed into the address space of the repeating client. Clients desiring a document object be translated for inclusion in a compound document interact with the framework by using queries to access a translation surrogate.

    • A system and method for managing the color palette for an object oriented operating system providing for the sharing of a plurality (e.g., 256) of colors for display by an external device. In a first aspect, an 8-bit color lookup table (CLUT) is shared by a plurality of views in a document being displayed on the external device such that consistent looking color is provided across a plurality of graphic devices. The inventive method includes creating a color look up table (CLUT) for the operating system, uniformly dividing the CLUT into a predetermined number of colors, displaying graphic information having a plurality of views, and sharing the predetermined number of colors in the CLUT amongst the plurality of views of the graphic information. The predetermined number of colors includes a plurality of colors each of which have a predetermined consistency when shared between first and second views of the plurality of views.
