Flares of the present invention include various features such as self-synchronization, remote control, motion-actuated or percussion-actuated features, dynamic shifting between side-emitting and top-emitting light emitters in response to changes in positional orientation (e.g., vertical vs. horizontal) of the flare; overrides to cause continued emission from side-emitting or top-emitting light emitters irrespective of changes in the flare's positional orientation; use of the flare(s) for illumination of traffic cones and other hazard marking or traffic safety objects or devices, group on/off features, frequency specificity to facilitate use of separate groups of flares in proximity to one another, selection and changing of flashing patterns and others.

摘要： A system of signal emitting modules is disclosed. The modules emit light or other signals to warn oncoming traffic that a road or other pathway has changed or is traversing a tortuous pathway. The modules are interconnected in a sequence so that they flash on and off in a pattern that leads the driver or observer along a path with less confusion than with randomly flashing or steady lights or reflectors. The modules are self-powered and can be arrayed first and programmed following deployment. The programming can be done with “mesh” technology, an external controller, or by dialing a specific number in each of a plurality of distributed controllers. The modules can improve highway safety by reducing driver confusion. The modules are arrayed to prevent a driver from seeing them from an oncoming direction. The driver coming from the opposite direction will have his or her own guiding system. The modules can also be deployed for use in nautical situations, to designate nautical obstructions (such as entering a harbor), shallow water, or other area of danger, and in the field of aviation to mark the direction and position of temporary runways or landing zones for both fixed wing and rotary wing aircraft.

Many invasive and non-invasive medical procedures require constant monitoring or intervention. Failure to properly observe or intervene may result in clinical harm. The devices and methods disclosed herein are useful in any field of medicine where periodic monitoring or procedures are required. The devices is designed to be familiar to medical personnel, and in its most common form will be packaged as a band aid, but may also be packaged as a coin sized device that adheres to or clips onto a patient's bandage, limb, or on a necklace. The timer provides an audible warning of timeout, a visual indication of timeout, a tactile indication or any combination of the three. The number of hours in the countdown sequence is variable and determined from a series of choices provided to the caregiver. The device can be used to monitor temperature and warn of an infection.
