    • Disclosed is a suspension assembly for a disk drive that includes: a mounting plate having a through-hole extending from a top-side of the mounting plate to a bottom-side of the mounting plate; a microactuator mounting structure formed in the mounting plate; a microactuator mounted in the microactuator mounting structure; and a flexure attached to the bottom-side of the of mounting plate. The flexure includes: a metal layer; an insulator layer; a trace layer that includes a ground trace; and an opening, wherein the opening extends through the metal layer and the insulator layer to a gold-plated ground trace. A conductive epoxy is bonded to the microactuator and extends through the through-hole to bond to the flexure, wherein the epoxy extends through the opening of the flexure to the gold-plated ground trace of the flexure such that the microactuator is grounded to the flexure.

    • Certain example embodiments relate to torsion compensation coils that cooperate with primary coils in voice coil motors of disk drive devices, and methods of making the same. In certain example embodiments, a voice coil motor is provided which may include a single external magnet. A primary coil may be located above the external magnet, with the primary coil being capable of receiving a first current. At least one torsion compensation coil may be connected to the primary coil. The at least one torsion compensation coil may be capable of receiving a second current. The at least one torsion compensation coil may be configured to reduce torsion and/or bending forces introduced by the first current passing through primary coil and/or magnetic field leakage from the external magnet.

    • An aspect of the invention can be regarded as a disk drive that includes a disk drive base and a magnetic disk. The disk drive further includes a rotary actuator coupled to the disk drive base. The rotary actuator has an MR read element disposed adjacent the magnetic disk. The MR read element has a bias voltage. The disk drive further includes a rotatable spindle motor hub for rotating the magnetic disk positioned on the spindle motor hub. The spindle motor hub is in electrical communication with the magnetic disk. The spindle motor hub is mechanically coupled to and electrically insulated from the disk drive base. The disk drive further includes a circuit for applying a voltage equivalent to the bias voltage to the spindle motor hub such that a voltage potential between the MR read element and the magnetic disk is mitigated.

    • Certain example embodiments relate to techniques for more precisely adjusting the spacing between a head and a disk in a disk drive device. A spindle motor of a disk drive device may be electrically isolated from at least the base plate by means of, for example, a nonconductive adhesive. Circuitry for monitoring and/or applying a voltage to the head and/or to the disk to control an amount of spacing between the head and the disk may be provided. In certain example embodiments, such circuitry may monitor the disk voltage and then apply an appropriate voltage bias to the head to control the spacing therebetween electrostatically. In certain other example embodiments, such circuitry may monitor the head voltage and then adjust the spindle voltage accordingly. In still other example embodiments, the disk voltage and the head voltage may be controlled and/or adjusted based on a known voltage differential so that a precise disk/head voltage potential is achieved.
