Orientation control means (120) for axisymmetrically orienting the liquid crystal molecules when a voltage is applied to the liquid crystal layer (13) is provided in the light reflection display portion (130).

The odd-numbered row of pixels each have a pixel electrode electrically connected to the opposite electrode used for the odd-numbered row of pixels, and the even-numbered row of pixels each have a pixel electrode electrically connected to the opposite electrode used for the even-numbered row of pixels. The polarity of the potential of the pixel electrode is reversed for every two rows of pixels sharing the sustain capacitance wire, while the potential of the sustain capacitance wire is varied to vary the potentials of the pixel electrodes of the two rows of pixels, thereby performing the capacitive coupling drive.
