    • First and second code comparators are sequentially responsive to keypad-entered first and second different codes. The first code enables operation of the engine. When a distance sensing device generates a signal representing traversal of a preset distance, this blocks the further operation of the engine based on the first code. The driver must enter a second code upon receipt of a warning that engine disablement is imminent. To prevent carjacking in which the driver is forcibly ejected from a car having its engine running in a normal operating mode, the driver surreptitiously trips a hidden switch as he exits the car. The hidden switch, which would typically be operated after both codes have been entered and with the engine running, resets the system. After a preset delay which is provided to permit the owner to reach safety from a carjacker, the system once again requires that the second code be inputted. The second code needs to be re-entered to keep the engine running. By this time the car will be sufficiently distant from the owner, and actuation of an alarm such as a siren encourages the carjacker to abandon the car at the time of such disablement.

    • A technique is provided for monitoring the viewing habits of individuals in selected households. A stationary monitoring unit is provided which cooperates with a portable monitoring unit designed to be worn on the head of the individuals in such household. The stationary monitoring unit includes a transmitter for emitting an activating signal to a receiver on the portable monitoring unit. Such receiver senses the emitted activating signal only if the individual wearing it is looking at the television set. When the activating signal is sensed, it is used to activate a transmitter which emits a signal uniquely identifying the individual wearing it. This signal is emitted to stationary monitoring unit which includes circuitry for recognizing it and storing it in a recorder for later retrieval and analysis.

    • A technique is provided for entering certain information into a computer without the use of hands. A touch screen system which utilizes a grid of light beams across a display surface is modified. Instead of interrupting the light beam with the operator's finger, light blocking devices are moved into position along the periphery of the surface to shield a light detector at the position where otherwise such detector would be blocked by the operator's finger. The light-blocking device is moved by motors under foot control. In another approach, indicator arrays are placed along adjacent sides of a display surface. One indicator along each side is lit by foot control to represent a selected position. In still another approach, a cursor is selectively positioned on the display surface with foot-operated control circuitry. Once a position is selected, further inputs can be made even with the use of another, hand-operated, technique in a convenient, user friendly and prompt manner.
