    • Methods and apparatus, including computer program products, for flattening an image. In one aspect, the invention provides a method that includes receiving an image having multiple objects with each object having an original outline. Objects from among the multiple objects are selected to be abstracted objects. A planar-mapping outline is defined for each object. The planar-mapping outline of each selected object is an enclosing outline that encloses the object, and the planar-mapping outline of each object not selected is the original outline of the object. The image is divided into non-overlapping regions by using the planar-mapping outlines of all the objects. Each region is flattened.

    • Various embodiments of a system and methods for using contextual features to improve face recognition in digital images are described. A face recognition system may semi-automatically label faces and/or search for faces in images. Faces may be detected in the images and visual and non-visual features may be determined for each face. The determined features may be facial and/or contextual features. Features may also be determined from labels assigned to the faces. Pair-wise comparisons of the faces, using the determined features, may determine distances between pairs of faces. Some features may be used to determine the relevance of other features. Dependent on the calculated distances, similar faces may be grouped and suggested labels for faces may be provided. The system may be scalable, processing faces in groups to limit the use of system resources to a certain amount, regardless of the size of a digital image collection.

    • One embodiment of the present invention provides a system that detects an object in an image. During operation, the system determines a relationship between sampling parameters and a detection rate for an object detection process. The system also determines a relationship between the sampling parameters and a detection speed for the object detection process. The system uses the determined relationships to generate specific sampling parameters. Next, the system performs the object detection process, wherein the object detection process uses the sampling parameters to sample locations in the image. This sampling process is used to refine the search for the object by identifying locations that respond to an object detector and are hence likely to be proximate to an instance of the object.
