    • The present invention is directed to methods, systems, devices, and kits for coating portions of a medical device or other work piece as well as to medical devices that have themselves been coated in accord with the invention. Under methods of the invention, portions of a medical device may be selectively coated. The method may include providing a medical device, an applicator, and a spreader. A layer of coating having a thickness may then be applied to a target surface of the medical device with the applicator. When the coating is applied, the spreader can be positioned in contact with the coating to reduce the coating thickness by spreading the coating over a larger surface area of the target surface.

    • Guidewires and design, material, manufacturing method, and use alternatives for the same. An example method for advancing a guidewire to a target site in the anatomy of a patient may include providing the guidewire and advancing the guidewire through a blood vessel to a position adjacent the target site. Advancing the guidewire through a blood vessel may include disposing the hinge portion across a bifurcation in the blood vessel. The guidewire may have a proximal end and a distal end. The guidewire may include an elongate tubular member including a proximal portion, a distal portion extending to the distal end of the guidewire, and a hinge portion disposed between the proximal portion and the distal portion. The proximal portion may have a plurality of slots formed therein and a first lateral flexibility. The distal portion may have a plurality of slots formed therein and a second lateral flexibility. The hinge portion may have plurality of slots formed therein and a third lateral flexibility that is greater than both the first lateral flexibility and the second lateral flexibility.
