    • A method of operating a system having at least one sensor for detecting an analyte gas in an ambient atmosphere and a sensor responsive to oxygen includes providing a volume in fluid connection with the sensor responsive to oxygen. The volume has an open state in which the volume is in fluid connection with the ambient atmosphere and at least a first restricted state in which entry of molecules from the ambient atmosphere into the volume is restricted as compared to the open state. The method further includes placing the volume in the open state, subsequently placing the volume in the first restricted state, and measuring a dynamic output of the sensor responsive to oxygen while the volume is in the first restricted state. The dynamic output provides an indication of the status of one or more transport paths of the system.

    • A method and an apparatus for detecting a number of variation in resistance within a material stack in response to a scanning and injection of a non-contacting electron stream into a material stack, the material stack having a first conductive contact layer, a variable resistive layer, a fixed resistive layer, and a second conductive contact layer, and the variations in resistance within the material stack being based on one of a plurality of resistive states of the variable resistive layer. The method also includes generating two magnetic fields within a transformer, the transformer being operatively coupled to the first and second conductive contact layers and generating a differential output signal within the transformer based on the two magnetic fields, the differential output signal being associated with one of the plurality of resistive states.

    • A circuit for non-destructive sensing of polarized materials includes a signal generator to generate a periodic, alternating voltage signal. The alternating voltage signal is applied to at least one cell of polarized material, such that the cell produces a cell output signal. A synchronous rectifier then rectifies the cell output waveform into positive and negative rectified signals. A differentiating amplifier receives the positive and negative rectified signals and produces an output signal wherein the output signal represents a data state of the cell.

    • The personal token card, which may be configured with the form factor of a Smartcard or of a PCMCIA card, includes at least one sensor for sensing environmental conditions and an output device for outputting signals representative of the environmental conditions. The sensor may sense radiation levels, chemical and biological toxins, temperature or pressure, or other conditions. The output device may generate an alarm, such as an audible or visual alarm, or may simply output recorded environmental data, either electronically or using a radio frequency output. A memory is provided for recording digitized data and a logic element is provided for analyzing recorded data to detect whether predetermined thresholds have been exceeded. A battery power supply is also provided to provide power for the various components. The power supply, as well as many of the other components, may be activated or deactivated in accordance with enablement signals received from an external system. For example, the battery may be activated only when needed, to thereby conserve power.

    • A molded case circuit breaker is taught with a housing base and a primary cover disposed on the housing base. The primary cover has a recess therein for an auxiliary module which is disposed in the recess. A secondary cover is disposed on the primary cover for covering the recess when the auxiliary module is disposed therein. In order to secure the auxiliary module underneath the secondary cover in the recess of the primary cover, the module has deposed thereon a locking protrusion which is complimentary with a locking opening in the primary cover. The locking protrusion is flexible and has a longitudinal central bulge so that as the protrusion is pressed inwardly into the opening, the bulge causes the flexible protrusion to reduce diameter due to the presents of longitudinal slots therein until the bulge has passed the opening in which case it springs outwardly toward its normal position thus securing the protrusion in the base. A flexible pull tab is provided for displacement under the auxiliary or secondary cover so that when the auxiliary or secondary cover is removed the pull tab may be tugged upon to remove the module from the primary cover by providing the reverse operation to the insertion operation previously described.
