    • An electromagnetic clutch is disclosed which includes a pulley and an electromagnetic coil. A hub is secured to a drive shaft and has a radially extending flange portion which faces the pulley at a predetermined axial gap. An armature plate is disposed in the axial gap between the pulley and the radially extending flange portion of hub. The armature plate is elastically connected to the flange portion of the hub by a plurality of U-shaped spring members. Each spring member is provided with a pair of fittings and a pair of spaced, opposing axial flanges extending from the end portion of the fittings. An elastic member is located in the gap between the axial flanges. The impact force on the drive shaft when the electromagnetic clutch is first actuated is reduced by the compressive deformation of the elastic members. The impact sound is also reduced by the twist deformation of the elastic members.

    • An electromagnetic clutch includes a clutch rotor of magnetic material which is rotatably supported on a bearing. An electromagnetic housing extends into an inner hollow space of the rotor. An annular magnetic coil is disposed within an annular hollow space of the electromagnetic housing. A magnetic armature plate faces the rotor and a predetermined axial air gap is formed therebetween. The armature plate is attracted to the rotor when the magnetic coil is energized. The rotor has an annular projection which extends from an axial end thereof. An annular groove is formed on an inner peripheral surface of the projection. A shield member for shielding a front surface of the electromagnetic clutch includes an annular portion, an open end, and a flange portion extending axially from a radial end of the annular portion. The flange portion includes a plurality of connecting members formed thereon for connecting the shield member to the rotor. The shield member is connected to the clutch rotor so that the connecting members of the shield member fit into the annular groove of the annular projection of the rotor. Thus, the electromagnetic clutch is easily assembled and the shield member is easily installed and removed from the assembly when so desired. Further, the shield member resists becoming disconnected or loosened during operation of the clutch assembly.

    • An electromagnetic clutch for an automotive air conditioning system is disclosed. The electromagnetic clutch includes a rotor, an electromagnetic coil, and an armature plate. A hub is secured to a drive shaft and has a radially extending flange portion which is provided with a plurality of pairs of first projecting portions. A damper plate is disposed forwardly of the armature plate so as to be connected with the armature plate through a plurality of leaf springs and is provided with a plurality of second projecting portions and longitudinal holes on the axial end surface thereof. Each pair of the first projecting portions can be disposed within each pair of the second projecting portions with a gap therebetween that may accommodate one of a plurality of elastic members. A stopper plate is disposed on the axial end surface of the damper plate and may be radially moved within the range of the longitudinal holes which are provided therein. Therefore, torsional resonance, shock and vibration are eased by the principally compressive deformation of the elastic member which is enclosed within the space between the first and second projecting portions.

    • An electromagnetic spring-wound clutch for a refrigerant compressor includes a coil-wound spring disposed around a pulley and having one end connected to an armature plate and cover plate. The cover plate is connected to a hub which is fixed on the outer end of the drive shaft of the refrigerant compressor through an elastic member. The elastic member is closely fitted in a polygonal-shaped air gap defined between the cover plate and hub. As a result, the impact force generated when the coil-wound spring is wound around the pulley during transmission of rotating motion is absorbed by the elastic member instead of the hub and drive shaft of the refrigerant compressor to thereby increase the life and durability of both the electromagnetic clutch and the refrigerant compressor.

Because most of the flux flowing through the electromagnetic housing flows through the rear side thereof, by forming the electromagnetic housing from first and second housings, a thicker magnetic flux flow path is formed, thereby improving the magnetic attraction and torque transfer from the pulley to the armature plate.

    • An electromagnetic clutch rotor has an axial end plate with a plurality of concentric rings formed therearound. Each concentric ring is defined by a plurality of alternating arcuate slits and ribs. Arcuate slits form poles on opposite sides thereof, and cause the magnetic flux to follow a zigzagging path between the axial end plate and the armature plate. The ribs on adjacent concentric rings are not aligned radially, and thus reduce the amount of flux leakage through the axial end plate. In addition, the ribs are progressively larger towards the radial center to account for the increased bending stresses towards the center of the axial end plate.
