Features and aspects hereof provide a simplified SSP link layer processor to enable cost reduction and simplification of Serial Attached SCSI (“SAS”) devices requiring only limited SSP exchange functionality. In one embodiment, a SAS expander may incorporate the simplified SSP link layer features and aspects hereof to permit simple management of SAS devices coupled to the expander or coupled downstream through other expanders. The simplified SSP link layer suffices for simple SAS management functions while reducing cost and complexity of the SAS expander. Features and aspects hereof may be implemented with minimal customized circuits for SSP link layer management in the SAS device. In one aspect hereof, the simplified link layer processing may be implemented as a simplified state machine model in combinatorial logic coupled with any requisite memory components.

    • Systems and methods are provided for automatically configuring ports of devices within an SAS network domain. A domain control element, such as an SAS initiator, is coupled to a plurality of expander devices. The domain control element configures ports of the expander devices by traversing port connections between the expander devices to determine routing attributes of the ports. The domain control element automatically configures the ports to operate according to the routing attributes. In one aspect hereof, an initiator device of the SAS network domain serves as a control element to perform the automated configuration of routing attributes. In another aspect hereof, an expander device serves as a control element to configure routing attributes of the ports.

    • A memory management unit (MMU) for a device controller that provides enhanced functionality while maintaining a small physical size or footprint, such that the die size required to manufacture the memory management unit circuitry within the device controller integrated circuit device remains small notwithstanding such enhanced functionality. This compact/tiny MMU provides virtual memory addressing and memory error detection functionality while maintaining a small physical die size. The small physical die size with enhanced functionality is obtained by improvements in translating virtual to physical addressing without use of extensive translation tables, which themselves would otherwise consume memory and associated die real estate. In addition, the MMU allows a firmware image containing code and data segments to be run-time swapped between internal shared context RAM and external memory.

For a chip containing many instances of the same module, it is advantageous to observe the same signal set for several of the modules concurrently. In particular, the present invention improves upon prior test MUX methods by placing additional mapping/steering logic within a module to provide greater flexibility in selecting signal sets for concurrent observation. The addition of mapping/steering logic to a module's test MUX structure allows a chip designer to arbitrarily map each of the test signal groups to any of the test output groups.
