    • A mold clamping apparatus includes a stationary platen, a movable platen, a driving device, a rotational-linear motion transmission mechanism, a braking device, and a mold clamping force applying mechanism. The stationary platen is arranged on a frame and mounts a stationary metal mold for a molding machine. The movable platen is arranged to oppose the stationary platen to move forward/backward with respect to the stationary platen and mounts a movable metal mold. The driving device moves the movable platen forward/backward with respect to the stationary platen. The rotational-linear motion transmission mechanism is arranged between the driving device and the movable platen and converts a rotational torque of the driving device into a linear motion in a moving direction of the movable platen. The braking device is connected to the driving device and brakes a linear motion of the movable platen toward the stationary platen at the end of the linear motion. The mold clamping force applying mechanism applies a mold clamping force to the movable platen upon braking of the braking device.

    • A vertical die casting machine comprising: a casting cylinder, pivotably mounted to a base, for activating a piston extension slidably fitted in a casting sleeve, and; a hollow block having an upper end connected to the casting sleeve and having a bore reduced at a lower end thereof through which bore the piston extension extends into the block.     • A pull-back ram cylinder apparatus in combination with a vertical mold clamping machine to be incorporated in a vertical molding or casting machine. The pull-back apparatus comprises a hydraulic cylinder for actuating a hollow ram. A ram extension consisting of the ram and a ram rod extending into the ram in a thread engagement is slidably fitted in the cylinder. The ram rod extends downwardly from the cylinder and is connected to a movable platen of the clamping machine carrying a movable mold. The cylinder has a lower throttle portion in which radial openings for discharging an operation oil are formed in an axially spaced arrangement. The inner diameter of the throttle portion is slightly larger than the outer diameter of the ram. The throttle portion having the axially spaced openings serves, in cooperation with the head end portion of the ram, as buffering means by which the movable mold is allowed to come into contact gently with a stationary mold. The thread engagement of the ram and the ram rod is advantageous in that the positional relationship between the movable platen and the ram can be easily adjusted according to the change of the thickness in molds.

    • In a vertical die casting machine of the type wherein molten metal contained in a vertical casting sleeve located beneath a stationary platen is cast into a die cavity defined between a stationary die and a movable die urged against the stationary die, the casting sleeve is divided into an upper and a lower part. The upper casting sleeve is secured to the stationary platen in communication with the die cavity. The lower casting sleeve is normally held in vertical alignment with the upper casting sleeve but is moved to a position lateral to the stationary platen for receiving the molten metal. When the lower casting sleeve is returned to the normal vertical position it is urged against the upper casting sleeve and molten metal in the lower casting sleeve is teemed and cast into the die cavity by operating an injection plunger.

    • A spool-type flow adjusting valve, for use in a die casting machine, including a valve bore and a valve spool slidably positioned therein. The spool is driven to axially reciprocate by a pulse motor by means of a transmission of a ball-screw type. The bore forms first and second chambers divided by the spool and has a flow inlet and a flow outlet, while the spool has an axial rod extending through the second chamber to the transmission and has one or more through-holes communicating the first and second chambers and a circumferential groove communicating with the through-holes. When the valve is opened, two flow passages are formed in the valve communicating the flow inlet and outlets, one through the first chamber and the other through the first chamber, the through-holes and the groove. The ratio of cross-sectional areas of the through-holes in total to the cross-sectional area of the spool is set to a value large enough to have a thrust acting on the spool in the direction of valve opening decreased as the degree of valve opening is increased from zero and have a direction of the thrust changed at a specific degree from the valve opening direction to the valve closing direction. When an abnormal accident, where the spool is free from control of positioning the spool, occurs during the casting operation, the spool is forced to return automatically to the specific degree by the resultant thrust.
