    • A system and method is disclosed for recording checkpoints in a distributed system. A distributed system comprises one or more computers implementing a plurality of nodes coordinating with one another to maintain a shared state of the distributed system. The system chooses a given one of the plurality of nodes to record a checkpoint of the shared state. In response, the given node records the checkpoint by isolating itself from communication with the other nodes, storing the checkpoint, restarting, and attempting to reinitialize its state from the stored checkpoint. Restarting may include deliberately causing a runtime error in the node. If the reinitialization is successful, the node restores communication with the other nodes and indicates to them that the newly stored checkpoint is valid.

    • A method and system are disclosed for implementing a client of a distributed lock manager comprising a plurality of nodes. The client is configured to send a request to the distributed lock manager, the request including a local time of the client. The client receives a response to the request from a node of the distributed lock manager where the request includes an echo of the local time included in the request. The response also indicates that a lock corresponding to a given resource has been granted to the client and the client subsequently utilizes the resource. The client subsequently determines that a safe period of time has elapsed for using the resource. This determination is dependent at least on a client staleness corresponding to a difference between the echoed time and current local time at the client.

    • A method and system for customer incentive-based management of computing resource utilization. According to one embodiment, a method may include provisioning a computing resource according to a given level of resource utilization, and dynamically predicting utilization of the computing resource that is expected to occur during a given interval of time. In response to dynamically predicting that utilization of the computing resource will be less than the given level of resource utilization during the given interval of time, the method may further include offering an incentive to a customer to utilize the computing resource during at least a portion of the given interval of time.

    • Techniques are described for providing a storage service that stores information about large numbers of transactions in a persistent manner, such as with a high degree of reliability, availability and scalability based at least in part on use of a distributed computing and storage system. In some situations, the transaction information storage service stores various information about transactions that each include at least one monetary payment (e.g., a micro-payment) between financial accounts of two or more of numerous users having accounts with one or more entities. The transaction information storage service may be provided by or otherwise affiliated with a merchant, and customers of the merchant may purchase usage of the storage service for programs executed by or otherwise affiliated with the customers, with the storage service available to remote executing programs via a defined API of the storage service, such as a Web services-based API.
