    • A fuel injection system for an internal combustion engine comprises: a first fuel injector which is arranged within a housing unit; an accumulator volume for supplying fuel to the first fuel injector; a first fuel pump arrangement comprising a pumping plunger which is driven, in use, to cause pressurisation of fuel within a first pump chamber; a first metering valve which is operable to control fuel flow into the first pump chamber; a first fuel passage providing communication between the first pump chamber and the accumulator volume; and a first non-return valve located in the first fuel passage between the first pump chamber and the accumulator volume; wherein the first fuel injector communicates with the first fuel passage at a position between the first non-return valve and the accumulator volume; and wherein communication between the first fuel injector and the accumulator volume is uninterrupted.

    • A control valve arrangement for use in controlling fuel pressure within a control chamber (30) includes a control valve member (32) which is movable between a first position in which the control chamber (30) communicates with a source of high pressure fuel, and a second position in which the control chamber (30) communicates with a low pressure fuel drain and communication between the control chamber (30) and the source of high pressure fuel is broken. The control valve arrangement also includes restricted flow means (55, 70, 86) for restricting the rate of flow of fuel from the control chamber (30) to the low pressure fuel drain when the control valve member (32) is moved from the first position to the second position. It is desirable for the restricted flow means to be configured and arranged such the rate of flow of fuel from the source of high pressure fuel to the low pressure drain for the period of time for which the control valve member (32) is moving between the second position and the first position is also restricted.

    • A carburetor includes an air inlet with a mechanically adjustable air valve, a mechanically adjustable atomizer discharging in the air inlet, and a mechanical metering device connected with the air valve and the atomizer, maintaining a stoichiometric ratio between amounts of air and fuel. Additionally, the carburetor includes a fuel pressure regulating unit to regulate the fuel pressure of fuel injected in the air inlet, based on one or more dynamic engine load parameters under which a vacuum signal in the air inlet is obtained via a vacuum intake conduit discharging into the air inlet. By regulating the fuel pressure also in dependence of the measured vacuum signal, the emission of unburned fuel is reduced under certain dynamic conditions of the combustion engine.

    • An injector is disclosed which comprises a valve needle engageable with a seating. A spring urges the needle towards its seating, the spring engaging a spring abutment. A pressure backing member positioned within the injector is slidable relative to the spring abutment under the action of the pressure of fuel applied thereto. The pressure backing member is engageable with a surface associate with the needle to urge the needle towards its seating. The slidable pressure backing member reduces the pressure in the pumping chamber both prior to and after termination of the injection process. Also, the backing member maintains the pressure in a fuel supply passage of a low level to enhance the efficiency of the injector.
