    • A system, method, and network node for dynamically controlling throughput over an air interface between a mobile terminal and a radio telecommunication system. A Gateway GPRS Service Node (GGSN) receives a plurality of traffic flows for the mobile terminal and uses a Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) module to determine a target delay class for each traffic flow. The GGSN signals the target delay class of each traffic flow to a Radio Network Controller (RNC) utilizing per-packet marking within a single radio access bearer (RAB). The RNC defines a separate virtual queue for each delay class on a per-RAB basis, and instructs a Node B serving the mobile terminal to do the same. The Node B services the queues according to packet transmission delays associated with each queue. A flow control mechanism in the Node B sets a packet queue length for each queue to optimize transmission performance.

    • Radio coverage in areas with normally poor radio conditions can be improved using distributed relay nodes to relay communications between the base station and user terminal. The distributed relay node comprises two main functional components interconnected by a local area network. The functional components of the relay node comprise a terminal part that appears to the serving base station as another user terminal, and a base station part that appears to the user terminal as a base station. The terminal part and base station part of the relay node can be remotely located and interconnected by an existing local area network based IP protocols. A packet delivery mechanism transfers data packets between the terminal part and base station part of the relay node in a manner that is transparent to the rest of the mobile communication network.

    • A method and apparatus for controlling the routing of a data packet sent from a first node towards a second node of a telecommunication network. The first node is a mobile node having an associated home network. An access router intercepts the data packet and determines whether the packet relates to a first mode of communication between the first and second nodes in which data packets generally bypass a home agent associated with the first node's home network. In a second mode of communication, home agent packets generally passed through the home agent. The access router drops the packet if the packet relates to the first mode of communication and if dropping the packet is determined to be in accordance with a pre-determined routing policy.
