    • A cabled communication link for a drill string includes spaced apart adapter subs within the drill string and a cable connecting the adapter subs for communication of a signal therebetween. The cabled communication link may be drill pipe joints are interconnected within the drill string between adapter subs to form a piped communication link, whereby the cabled communication link establishes a pathway to the piped communication link for transmitting a signal through the drill string. The cabled communication link may also be in a non-wired section of the drill string is disposed between adapter subs, whereby the cabled communication link establishes a pathway for transmitting a signal through the non-wired section of the drill string. Inductive couplings are preferably used for communication across the adapter subs and wired drill pipe joints. Another aspect of the cabled communication employs wireless transceivers at or near the surface of the wellbore.

    • Method, apparatus and systems for drilling wells, such as for production of petroleum products and ensuring efficient well drilling and protection of well drilling systems during drilling operations. A closed-loop drilling control system, including a digital switching control regulator (SCR) module is provided for automated actuation of selected drilling rig controls responsive to downhole and surface measurements of drilling parameters. The closed-loop drilling control system is responsive to digital data from a measuring-while-drilling (MWD) tool for refining the drilling controls by automated correction of driller inputs to the drilling controls of the well drilling system during drilling operations. The downhole data, such as surface weight on bit, downhole weight on bit, pressure and flow rate of downhole drilling fluid hydraulics, etc. is transmitted by MWD telemetry to a digitally controlled switching control regulator (SCR) module via an interfacing computer and utilized to refine the drilling controls by automated downhole data responsive correction of driller inputs to the drilling controls of the well drilling system.

    • An apparatus and method are disclosed for actively cooling instrumentation, such as electronic circuits, in a downhole tool. This apparatus includes a compressor, condenser and expansion valve connected in circuit to an evaporator or heat exchanger. The evaporator/heat exchanger includes an inner container positioned about the instrumentation, and an outer chamber positioned about the inner container. A cooling fluid absorbs heat from the instrumentation as it passes through the inner container. The fluid then passes into the outer container where it may absorb heat from the wellbore. The heated fluid is then pressurized via the compressor, condensed into liquid via the condenser and selectively released back into the internal container upon cooling via the expansion valve. The fluid continuously circulates through the system whereby the instrumentation is insulated from heat and/or cooled.
