    • A consumer device is presented that utilizes a system and method for downloading from a network server the run time image of the device's operating system and/or application program. As such, the amount of Flash memory required to store the operating system may be greatly reduced, which also reduces the cost associated with such Flash memory. Since the run time image is downloaded from a network server, the image can be updated at the server for bug fixes and feature enhancements. For devices operating in audio/video distribution, additional security is provided to maintain the digital rights management of the A/V content. This security is provided through a combination of hardware and software security features including ROM in the CPU or board mounted Flash memory with an unwritable section. Further, each boot load program checks the digital signature of the program it is loading before that program is allowed to execute.

    • Digital input devices are automatically identified when attached to a game port, serial port, or parallel port of a personal computer, without requiring user interaction. In a disclosed embodiment, a digital game pad is connected to the game port of a personal computer and includes a device port for connecting other input devices, including another digital game pad, a digital joystick, or an analog input device. A polling request is implemented by a class driver to detect a digital input device and to determine its type. A class driver calls a device detection function that successively checks for registered devices in a list. A minidriver for each class of device is responsible for determining if the type of device with which it is used is attached to the port. Once the connected device is identified, the operating system registry is updated with the ID of the connected device. When a digital input device is disconnected, the system responds by removing its ID from the registry and removing any drivers that are no longer required.

    • A technique for emulating a computer game port uses a memory manager software program to detect output instructions from a computer software program to the game port. In response to the detected output instruction, the memory manager diverts program operation to an interrupt routine wherein position data is read from a data frame and one or more game port delay times are calculated to correspond with the position of the selected positional control device. The delay times correspond with the delay times of a conventional analog joystick coupled to a conventional game port. The memory manager also detects input instructions from computer software program to the game port and diverts the computer software program to an interrupt servicing routine in which the emulated delay times are used to load a data register that is read by the computer software program. The data bits in the data register correspond to the delay time bits and are initially set to a first logic level during the delay time period, and reset after the expiration of the delay time period. In this manner, any positional control device can be used to provide position data to emulate a computer game port. The computer may also contain a plurality of positional control devices, each supplying its position data in a predetermined format to the data frame within the computer memory. A data selector indicates the source in the data frame of each direction of positional control device movement. In response to intercepted output instructions from the computer software program, the system reads position data from the user selected data source and calculates the emulated delay times accordingly.

The file is downloaded and assigned a handle. The file is then stored in a storage location such as a file cache or in a persistent storage location. Upon command of an advanced content playlist or sequence, the file is called by calling the handle of the file. The storing of the file may include storing the file in a location where the file is subject to an automatic removal operation. The file may be an image file or any other type of file, especially multimedia files. The automatic removal operation may occur upon a quitting or restarting of the application. If another request is made for another file, the prior downloaded file may be replaced.
