    • An adjustable transfer tool is used to compensate for row bow during lapping a bar or a row of magnetic head sliders. The adjustable transfer tool enables establishing uniform and substantially precise throat heights for a multiplicity of thin film transducers disposed on said sliders. To allow the desired adjustment, the transfer tool incorporates slot means by which the shape of the surface of the tool on which the bar of sliders is mounted can be modified so that the slider transducers assume a collinear array across its entire length for the lapping process. Adjustment is accomplished by manual means, such as by a screw or a tapered pipe plug, or by electrical means, such as a piezoelectric actuator, in conjunction with a computer or microprocessor.

    • A pipe cleaner for manually cleaning the threads of pipes of differing sizes includes a body into which is slidably engaged at least one arm with an abrasive member. The abrasive member at the end of the arm extends into an orifice in the body. A single arm opposing a "V" shaped block may be used as well as a plurality of arms with abrasive members. A cover is rotatably mounted on the body and includes a number of angled slots, which are angled relative to radii of the cover and may be an arc segment of a spiral. Pegs that are coupled to each arm are engaged with the angled slot in the cover. Thus by rotating the cover relative to the body of the pipe cleaner, the arms with their abrasive members are driven inwards and outwards of the orifice by the peg and angled slot assembly. The cover includes an orifice that is approximately the same size as the orifice in the body, such that the cover does not inhibit a pipe from extending through the pipe cleaner. The body of the pipe cleaner may alternatively include opposing jaws upon which are mounted, respectively, a "V" shaped block and a beam having an abrasive member. The jaws pivot to adjust the position of the abrasive member relative to the "V" shaped block so as to accommodate pipes of various diameters.

    • An automated system for forming a taper on thin film magnetic heads comprises a lapping fixture positioned in apposition to a rotary lapping plate. A ceramic bar, upon which the magnetic heads are deposited and from which air bearing head sliders are fabricated, is attached to an adjustable transfer tool that is secured to a yoke holder. The holder is fixed securely on the lapping fixture so that the air bearing surface of the magnetic heads face the surface of the lapping plate. During the tapering process, data signals are obtained representative of the length of the taper being formed upon the heads spaced along the bar. The signals are calibrated and processed by a computer which provides command signals for varying the weight or pressure upon the lapping fixture across the fixture during tapering, allowing uniformity of taper to be achieved along with automatic termination of the tapering process upon obtaining the desired taper across the ceramic bar.

    • The disclosed armor system for protecting a vehicle from high energy projectiles includes a leading layer, relative to the projectile trajectory, positioned exterior to the hull; a first plurality of sheet-like layers of a low density material positioned between the leading layer and the hull; and a second plurality of sheet-like high strength metal layers positioned between the leading layer and the hull. The individual ones of the first plurality of high strength metal layers are positioned alternating with, and to the rear of, individual ones of the second plurality of low density material layers. The leading layer can be one of a sheet-like metal layer, a metalicized grid layer, and the outer-most layer of the first plurality of low density materials layers. The materials of the high strength metal layers may be selected from high strength steel and high strength aluminum, and the materials of the low density material may be selected from low density polypropylene composites and R-Glass composites.
