    • A surge protector for an electrical component configured to withstand higher voltages without breakdown and without substantially raising maximum voltage during high voltage surges. The surge protector may have a first varistor, a gas discharge tube (GDT), and a resistor. The GDT may be non-conductive below a trigger voltage and is conductive above the trigger voltage. The first varistor and the GDT may be connected in series between a live line and a ground line and/or a second line and the ground line, and the resistor may extend across a spark gap of the GDT. The electrical component may include the live line, the second line, the ground line, the surge protector, and a load electrically-coupled with the live line, the second line, and the ground line.

    • An electric motor system has a motor having motor windings and a motor housing. The motor is a variable speed permanent magnet motor configured to drive a load which is part of a residential or commercial machine. A motor control subsystem includes a power module electrically connected to the motor windings. A common mode inductor is electrically interposed between the motor control subsystem and the motor windings so as to present a high impedance obstacle to common mode transients and to reduce an electromagnetic interference effect of an inherent capacitance of each of the motor windings. The common mode inductor is an air core inductor located substantially within the motor housing, and takes the form of additional turns added to the end of each of the motor windings.

    • A system for detecting a decrease in or loss of an input phase to a motor. A power rectifier rectifies and combines three input voltages to produce an output voltage to power the motor. A PFC circuit manages the power flowing to the motor. A sensing circuit located between the power rectifier and the PFC senses a voltage level of the power rectifier's output voltage. Alternatively, a sensing rectifier is connected before the power rectifier, and the sensing circuit senses the voltage level of the sensing rectifier's output voltage. A microprocessor compares the sensed voltage level to a threshold voltage level which is indicative of the decrease in or loss of one of the three input voltages, and if the former drops below the latter, then the microprocessor sends a signal to either shut off the motor or cause the PFC circuit to reduce the power flowing to the motor.

    • In a motor control system, a controller generates a single control signal for a motor control unit in a first electric motor and another motor control unit in a second electric motor. The motor control units in the first and second electric motors operate the first and second electric motors at a first rate in response to the control signal being at a first level. The motor control unit in the first electric motor operates the first electric motor at a second rate and the motor control unit in the second electric motor operates the second electric motor at a third rate in response to the control signal being at a second level, the third rate being different than the second rate.
