    • Embodiments described herein relate to a light sensing system. In one embodiment, the light sensing system may include a microprocessor including an input pin configured to receive a first voltage from a light sensor. The light sensing system may also include a pull-up resistor coupled to the input pin. The pull-up resistor may include a first gate. The light sensing system may further include a pull-down resistor coupled to the input pin. The pull-down resistor may include a second gate. The first and second gates may allow for connecting or disconnecting the pull-up and pull-down resistors based on the amount or intensity of light detected by the light sensor.

    • A method for reading a meter includes (1) capturing a first image of digits displayed by the meter, (2) roughly locating the digits by correlating the entire first image against symbols, (3) precisely locating the digits by correlating the digits against the symbols, which are now rotated, resized, and repositioned to maximize correlation, (4) determining and storing nominal centers of the digits in a nonvolatile memory. The method further includes (5) capturing a second image of the digits, (6) locating regions of interest in the second image according to the nominal centers, (7) determining vertical positions of full digits (or partial digits) in the regions of interest, (8) aligning symbols (or partial symbols) and the full digits (or the partial digits) according to the vertical position, and (9) correlating the symbol and the full digits (or the partial symbols and the partial digits).

    • Systems and methods are provided for detecting ambient light with reduced sensitivity to infrared sources. An electronic device may include an infrared sensor, an ambient light sensor, a decoder, and a processor. The infrared sensor may detect an intensity of infrared light. The ambient light sensor may be configured to detect incident light and to generate an electronic signal indicative of an intensity of visible light. The decoder may be configured to receive the intensity of infrared light and to generate an intensity of decoded infrared light. The processor, which may be coupled to the decoder and the ambient light sensor, may be configured to substitute an alternate electronic signal for the electronic signal if the intensity of infrared light exceeds a threshold amount.

    • A dual purpose ambient light sensor. More particularly, an ambient light sensor may be provided on an electronic device to aid in controlling the brightness of the illuminators of the device. The ambient light sensor may be mounted in such a way as to detect ambient light when the electronic device is opened or closed so that the device may control the brightness of the illuminators of the device, whether the illuminators are mounted on the outer or inner shell of the device. Further, when the display is closed, the sensitivity of the ambient light sensor may be adjusted appropriately to account for the lesser amount of light that may reach the sensor. Finally, a spacer or light pipe may be provided to allow ambient light to reach the sensor to provide an accurate ambient light reading when the device is in the closed position.
