    • According to one embodiment, an image display apparatus includes a liquid crystal panel, a backlight, a luminance distribution calculation unit, an error calculation unit, and an emission intensity update unit. The backlight includes a plurality of light sources which emit light. The luminance distribution calculation unit calculates a predicted value for an intensity distribution of light entering the liquid crystal panel if each of the light sources is lit with an emission intensity. The error calculation unit obtains a brightness of a display image which is realized if the each of the light sources is lit with the emission intensity, and the error calculation unit calculates an error between the obtained brightness and an ideal brightness of the display image corresponding to the input video signal. The emission intensity update unit updates the emission intensity of the each of the light sources to reduce the error.

    • According to one embodiment, a display apparatus includes a light modulating unit, a light source unit, a luminance setting unit, a luminance distribution calculating unit, a signal level converting unit, and a control unit. The light source unit includes a basic light source and an extended light source illuminating each of divisional areas into which the display area tentatively divided. The basic light source emits white light with first emission peak wavelengths. The extended light source emits light with a second emission peak wavelength being different from the first emission peak wavelengths and being within a range between shortest and longest wavelengths of the first emission peak wavelengths. The control unit is configured to generate a control signal controlling the basic light source and the extended light source so as to provide a period in which the basic light source and the extended light source simultaneously emit light.

    • According to one embodiment, an image display device has a liquid crystal panel, a backlight, an intensity setting unit, a presumption unit, a signal correction unit, an error calculation unit and a control unit. The intensity setting unit sets intensities of the light sources, respectively. The presumption unit presumes color information based on intensity information representing the intensities. The signal correction unit corrects an input video signal according to the color information, and obtains a corrected video signal. The error calculation unit presumes a display image from the corrected video signal and the input video signal, and calculates display errors between the presumed display image and an input image corresponding to the input video signal. The control unit controls sets the intensities of the light sources as the emission intensities of the backlight so that the display errors obtained from the error calculation unit can be minimum.
