    • The present invention pertains to a process for manufacturing a solid composite layer, said process comprising the following steps: (i) providing a mixture comprising: at least one functional fluoropolymer comprising at least one hydroxyl group [polymer (F)], at least one metal compound of formula (I) [compound (M)]: X4-mAYm wherein X is a hydrocarbon group, optionally comprising one or more functional groups, m is an integer from 1 to 4, A is a metal selected from the group consisting of Si, Ti and Zr, and Y is a hydrolysable group selected from the group consisting of an alkoxy group, an acyloxy group and a hydroxyl group, and at least one inorganic filler material [filler (I)] in an amount of from 50% to 95% by weight, with respect to the total weight of said polymer (F) and said filler (I); (ii) reacting at least a fraction of said hydroxyl group(s) of at least one polymer (F) with at least a fraction of said hydrolysable group(s) Y of at least one compound (M), so as to provide a fluoropolymer composition comprising at least one grafted fluoropolymer [polymer (Fg)] comprising pendant groups of formula -Ym-1-AX4-m, wherein m, Y, A and X have the same meaning as defined above; and (iii) processing the fluoropolymer composition obtained in step (ii), so as to obtain a solid composite layer. The invention also pertains to the solid composite fluoropolymer layers obtained from said process and to uses of said solid composite fluoropolymer layers as separators in electrochemical devices.

    • The invention pertains to a process for manufacturing a polymer electrolyte separator based on a fluoropolymer hybrid organic/inorganic composite, said process comprising: (i) providing a mixture of: —at least one fluoropolymer comprising recurring units derived from at least one (meth)acrylic monomer [monomer (MA)] of formula (I): wherein each of R1, R2, R3, equal or different from each other, is independently a hydrogen atom or a C1-C3 hydrocarbon group, and ROH is a C1-C5 hydrocarbon moiety comprising at least one hydroxyl group [polymer (F)]; —at least one metal compound [compound (M)] of formula: X4-mAYm wherein m is an integer from 1 to 4, A is a metal selected from the group consisting of Si, Ti and Zr, Y is a hydrolysable group, X is a hydrocarbon group, optionally comprising one or more functional groups; and —at least one electrolyte (E); and —at least one liquid plasticizer (S); (ii) reacting at least a fraction of hydroxyl groups of the ROH groups of said monomer (MA) of said polymer (F) with at least a fraction of said compound (M), so as to obtain a grafted polymer comprising pendant —Ym-1AX4-m groups, with m, Y, A and X having same meaning as above detailed; (iii) hydrolyzing and/or polycondensing compound (M) and/or pendant —Ym-1AX4-m groups, as above detailed to yield a liquid mixture comprising fluoropolymer hybrid organic/inorganic composite comprising inorganic domains and incorporating solvent (S) and electrolyte (E); and (iv) casting a film from the liquid mixture obtained in (iii); (v) drying the film obtained in (iv) for obtaining the polymer electrolyte separator.

    • The present invention pertains to a process for manufacturing a fluoropolymer hybrid organic/inorganic composite, said process comprising: (i) providing a mixture comprising: (a) at least one fluoropolymer comprising recurring units derived from at least one fluorinated monomer and at least one comonomer [comonomer (MA)] comprising at least one hydroxyl group [polymer (F)]; (b) at least one metal compound [compound (M)] of formula (I): X4-mAYm, (I) wherein m is an integer from 1 to 4, and, according to certain embodiments, from 1 to 3, A is a metal selected from the group consisting of Si, Ti and Zr, Y is a hydrolysable group, X is a hydrocarbon group, optionally comprising one or more functional groups; (c) a liquid medium comprising at least one compound selected from the group consisting of a diester of formula (IIde) and an ester-amide of formula (IIea): R1—OOC—Zde—COO—R2 (IIde) R1—OOC—Zea—CO—NR3R4 (IIea) wherein: R1 and R2, equal to or different from each other, are independently selected from the group consisting of C1-C20 hydrocarbon groups, R3 and R4, equal to or different from each other, are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, C1-C36 hydrocarbon groups, possibly substituted, being understood that R3 and R4 might be part of a cyclic moiety including the nitrogen atom to which they are bound, said cyclic moiety being possibly substituted and/or possibly comprising one or more than one additional heteroatom, and mixtures thereof, Zde and Zea, equal to or different from each other, are independently a linear or branched C3-C10 divalent alkylene group; and (d) optionally, at least one electrolytic salt (ES); (ii) reacting at least a fraction of hydroxyl groups of said comonomer (MA) of said polymer (F) with at least a fraction of the hydrolysable groups Y of said compound (M), so as to obtain a grafted fluoropolymer [polymer (Fg)] comprising one or more pendant groups of formula —Ym-1AX4-m; and (iii) hydrolysing and/or polycondensing said compound (M) and/or said pendant groups of formula —Ym-1AX4-m to yield a liquid mixture comprising the fluoropolymer hybrid organic/inorganic composite and incorporating said liquid medium.
