    • A compact disc storage book is formed with board book pages having pockets therein to receive compact discs. The board book is comprised of folded, printed signatures adhered to one another. A hard cover is attached to and covers the pages to protect the pages and compact discs from damage or contamination. The board book has an expandable spine, which increases its size or thickness from its smaller empty size to its larger, filled size when filled with compact discs. In the preferred method of making this storage book, the signatures have been printed and slit to form the CD receiving pockets prior to being folded on a signature folding machine. The folded signatures are fed by feeders of a signature gathering machine in proper sequence onto a gathering conveyor. The signature gathering machine has a programmable glue applicator to form the glue pattern including the glue pattern for the accordion fold, expandable backbone for the book form. The outer protective cover is attached, preferably by adhering the outer book form pages to facing sides of the casing cover.

    • A method for eliminating or controlling electroosmosis and other zeta potential related phenomena in electrophoresis comprising conducting electrophoresis employing electrophoretic surfaces coated with covalently bound hydrophilic, neutral polymers is described. The point of optical focus for accurate mobility measurements is increased from a narrow stationary level to the entire chamber, facilitating accurate measurements by mechanical means. The method also reduces or eliminates assymetric fluid flows due to electroosmosis in electrophoresis chambers of square or rectangular cross-section.

    • A cable system comprises a main line carrying first RF signals for a plurality of subscribers, and a subscriber line coupled with the main line and carrying the first RF signals between the subscriber's facility and the main line and also carrying second RF signals that are different in frequency from the first RF signals. The system further comprises a rectifier/voltage multiplier connected to the subscriber line for converting AC energy in the second RF signals into DC current, and an active RF device powered by the DC current from the rectifier/voltage multiplier, the RF device being located along the subscriber line. The system can include a filter connected between the subscriber line and the rectifier/voltage multiplier for filtering the second RF signals.     • An active step attenuator can attenuate the RF signal from a cable modem or other RF source. The active step attenuator converts the RF energy into a DC control signal that controls the attenuation applied to the RF signal. The voltage of the control signal is proportional to the RF energy, so that the active step attenuator attenuates a stronger RF signal more than a weaker RF signal. The active step attenuator may be in the form of a diplex circuit, one branch of which passes signals in one frequency band without attenuation and the other branch of which actively attenuates signals in another frequency band.

    • An active step attenuator can attenuate the RF signal from a cable modem or other RF source.
