    • A communications scheme enables a central communications station to assist two communications systems located behind firewalls that prevent communication initiated from an external data network to establish direct communication with each other. In one embodiment, the systems separately establish communications with the central communications station and obtain from it the connection information (e.g., IP address, port, etc.) of the other. The systems then directly communicate with each other using the obtained connection information while pretending to be the central communications station. In another embodiment in which the firewalls include NAT devices that implement network address translation, the systems exchange connection information for establishing a new connection through the central communications station and then complete a three-way handshake with the assistance of the central communications station, thereby allowing the central communications station to remove itself from the communication.

    • Dual site supervision is provided for a control channel cellular radio for a fire alarm reporting system that uses logic that causes a control channel cellular transceiver to operate in a nonstandard manner and to use a different and second cellular base station or site that the unit would not normally select operating pursuant to a standard cell phone software module. The logic causes the control channel cellular transceiver to monitor and test through more than one cell base station or site, thereby meeting the dual communication path supervision requirement for UL listed communications systems for stand alone fire alarm reporting systems. The available cellular control channels are first scanned, and the signal strength of each cellular control channel is measured. Then the cellular control channel with the strongest signal strength and the cellular control channel with the second strongest signal strength which are verified as being available for the assigned carrier are selected to report the status of the fire alarm system. A cellular radio message on the status of the fire alarm system is transmitted over the cellular control channel with the strongest signal strength, or if unavailable over the cellular control channel with the second strongest signal strength.

The notification system comprises a server for relaying the request for the remote status update, an access server for receiving the relayed request for the remote status update and for determining whether a remote device is registered to receive the remote status update, a host website for allowing the remote device to be registered to receive the remote status update, and a central monitoring server for generating the remote status update based upon the request. The central monitoring server is coupled to a remote security device. The security device is configured to detect an event and transmit a message to the central monitoring server in response to the detected event. The remote status update includes information regarding the detected event.

    • The inventive system and method for determining the availability of a computer network comprises a device operable to connect to at least the computer network using internet communications and using GSM, and an alarm service and/or a central server, wherein the device attempts to connect to the computer network using the internet communications and if the device fails to connect within a predetermined value, such as an amount of time or a number of tries, the device uses the GSM to notify the alarm service of the failure to connect. In one embodiment, after the device notifies the alarm service and/or central server of the failure to connect, the device continues to attempt to connect to the computer network, and if the device connects within another predetermined value, the device notifies the alarm service and/or central server of the restoral of service.
