    • An LCD device according to the present invention has: an LCD panel; an operation and correction circuit configured to perform a correction operation with respect to an input gray-scale data of a target frame image by using an arithmetic expression to generate an output gray-scale data; a data line driver configured to drive the LCD panel in accordance with the output gray-scale data; and a correction data calculation circuit configured to generate a correction data that specifies a relationship between the input gray-scale data and the output gray-scale data of the target frame image, depending on the input gray-scale data of the target frame image or an input gray-scale data of a precedent frame image followed by the target frame image. The operation and correction circuit determines coefficients of the arithmetic expression from the correction data.

    • A display panel driver includes: a compression circuit, when receiving image data of N×M pixels of a target block, generating compressed image data corresponding to the target block by compressing the image data; an image memory storing the compressed image data; a decompression circuit generating decompressed image data by decompressing the compressed image data from the image memory; and a drive circuit driving a display panel in response to the decompressed image data. The compression circuit selects one of a plurality of compression methods based on a correlation between the image data of the N×M pixels, and generates the compressed image data by the selected compression method. The plurality of compression methods includes: a first method calculating a first value corresponding to image data of the N×M pixels and putting the first value in the compressed image data, a second method calculating a second value corresponding to image data of n pixels of the N×M pixels and putting the second value in the compressed image data, and a third method calculating a bit plane reducing data by performing a bit plane reduction process independently on image data of each of the N×M pixels and putting the bit plane reducing data in the compressed image data.

    • A display device is provided with a display panel and a controller driver. The controller driver includes: a preceding image processing stage performing color-reduction processing on input image data to generate color-reduced image data; a memory; a latter image processing stage adapted to perform modification processing on the color-reduced image data received from the memory to generate output image data; and a driver circuit driving the display panel in response to the output image data. The latter image processing stage is provided with a counter generating a counter value; a binary LUT outputting an LUT output value in response to the counter value and coordinates of a target pixel selected from the plurality of pixels; and a selector section generating the output image data from the color-reduced image data in response to the LUT output value. The bit width of the output image data is identical to that of the color-reduced image data. The value of the output image data is identical to the corresponding value of the color-reduced image data when the LUT output value is a first value, while the value of the output image data is modified from the corresponding value of the color-reduced image data when the LUT output value is a second value different from the first value.

    • A controller/driver for driving main and sub display panels is composed of first and second memory sections, a color reduction circuit, and a data line driver circuit. The first and second memory sections are used as multipurpose display memories. When the controller/driver is placed in a first mode, the first and second memory sections store therein a pair of image data color-reduced under different conditions for achieving frame rate control. When the controller/driver is placed in a second mode, on the other hand, the first and second memory sections store sub and main image data respectively associated with images to be displayed on main and sub display panels.
