    • The area of panels used in an airbag that inflates so that a recess extends in the vertical direction between a left chamber and a right chamber. The airbag 1 includes a front chamber 2 positioned in the forefront when viewed from the position of an occupant, the left chamber 3 communicating with the front chamber 2 to be inflated on the left side in front of the occupant, and the right chamber 4 communicating with the front chamber 2 to be inflated on the right side in front of the occupant. In a state in which the airbag 1 is inflated, there is no extending member such as a tie panel between the distal parts of the left chamber 3 and the right chamber 4, and a recess 6 formed between the distal parts of the left chamber 3 and the right chamber 4 opens toward the occupant, and continuously extends from the upper part of the airbag 1 to the lower part thereof. A tether belt 7 extends between the upper part of the deepest part of the recess 6, and the bottom part of the airbag 1 so that the upper part of the recess 6 is pulled to the inside of the airbag 1.

    • The invention relates to an airbag, especially a lateral airbag, preferably in the shape of a tube, which is connected to at least two points on the motor vehicle and accommodated in its non-inflated state in a curved storage area. The invention provides for at least one tensioning cord (3) between the gas bag and a point of attachment to the motor vehicle, whereby said tensioning cord (3) can be tautened by the inflating gas bag. A preferred version provides for the tensioning cord (3) to be attached with one end to the gas bag (8) and with the other end to the motor vehicle (F1), whereby, when the gas bag inflates, the cord's point of attachment on the gas bag, together with the gas bag, is able to move away from the point (F1) where the tensioning cord (3) is attache to the motor vehicle. In this way the gas bag can be tautened without the need for additional mechanical or electrical components.

    • An airbag is inflated by gas for deployment to the front of and for restraining an occupant. A tether allows an inner capacity of the airbag to be equal to or smaller than a predetermined value by restricting a distance between a proximal end of the airbag and a surface of the airbag at deployment. A control unit acquires information relating to at least one of an occupant seat position, an occupant position to an instrument panel, an occupant physique, an occupant weight, and a magnitude of a collision impact. A release unit controls capacity and configuration of the airbag by releasing an end of the tether at a side of the proximal end according to the information acquired by the control unit. A vent discharges the gas before activation of the release unit and is closed on activation of the release unit.

    • An airbag includes a vent and a gas discharge limitation member to limit gas discharged from the vent. The limitation member includes at least one invertible portion on a surface on a side opposite the occupant-facing surface of the airbag and capable everting toward the outside of the airbag. The limitation member includes an interlocking member for interlocking movement of the occupant-facing surface in an occupant direction and an opposite direction and for interlocking movement of the invertible portion inward of the airbag and outward of the airbag when expanded. The limitation member includes a lid covering the vent and being pulled by the invertible portion when the invertible portion everts towards the outside of the airbag. The lid closes the vent or opens the vent by a small amount until the lid member is pulled by the invertible portion and opens the vent by at least a large amount.

    • An apparatus and method for folding and packaging an airbag includes a tapered concentrator. The airbag can be a head or side-window airbag. The concentrator has an inlet and an outlet whose dimension is smaller than the inlet. Feeding the airbag through the concentrator squeezes or compresses (i.e., folds) the airbag to a predetermined cross section corresponding the outlet size of the concentrator. The airbag can include a strap at one end portion thereof. The strap is feed through the concentrator, such as by pulling the strap therethrough. Pulling the strap pulls the airbag through the smaller outlet, which compresses or folds the airbag. Also, by placing an airbag package having an inlet sized to the outlet of the concentrator adjacent to the outlet of the concentrator, and feeding the strap through the airbag package, the folded airbag is inserted into the package substantially simultaneously with the folding operation. The concentrator can include pre-orienting elements for forming uniform folds.
