    • An adaptive focusing apparatus and method thereof of an optical disc drive having a focus servo controller moves a pickup head to an optimal focus point. A disc driver rotates an optical disc and includes a reflected signal detector detecting a signal reflected from the optical disc by the pickup head and a signal processor preventing spikes between a surface of the optical disc and the pickup head in response to the reflected signal and generating a focus drive signal for the focus servo controller using an adaptive focus search algorithm. The algorithm includes a static part and a dynamic part to reduce a focus search time. Accordingly, damage to the optical disc due to spikes between the surface of the optical disc and the pickup head can be prevented and a focus search time can be reduced.

    • An optical recording/reproducing apparatus and method to determine a type of disk including a photodetector divided into at least two light receiving sections in a radial direction. A radial subtractor generates a radial push-pull signal from a difference between light receiving signals from a disk and received by the at least two light receiving sections, where the disk includes one of a first disk and a second disk. An upper envelope detector detects an upper envelope signal from the radial push-pull signal and a lower envelope detector detects a lower envelope signal from the radial push-pull signal. A phase comparator detects a phase difference between the upper envelope signal and the lower envelope signal. A type of disk determiner distinguishes the first disk from the second disk according to a magnitude of the phase difference and outputting a signal indicative thereof, where the second disk includes a density higher than the first disk. A servo error generator and servo controller receives the magnitude of the phase difference and the light receiving signals and outputting servo error signals. A servo driver amplifier receives the servo error signals to output a voltage to drive a spindle motor of the disk. Furthermore, a first track cross signal generator generates a first track cross signal from an envelope of an RF SUM signal, wherein the RF SUM signal is obtained by adding the light receiving signals. A second track cross signal generator generates a second track cross signal from an envelope of the radial push-pull signal. A switch selectively outputs one of the first track cross signal and the second track cross signal according to the output signal from the type of disk determiner.

    • A method and apparatus for detecting the direction of movement of a laser spot in an optical disc recording/reproducing apparatus having a photodetector divided into two or more sections, each of which is a light receiving device, aligned in a radial direction that includes detecting a phase difference between the light receiving signals corresponding to light receiving devices of the photodetector. A first phase difference signal is obtained that indicates the degree to which the phase of the light receiving signal corresponding to a first light receiving device farthest advanced in the radial direction leads the phase of the light receiving signal corresponding to a second light receiving device. A second phase difference signal is obtained that indicates the degree to which the phase of the light receiving signal corresponding to the second light receiving device leads the phase of the light receiving signal corresponding to the first light receiving device. The first and second phase difference signals are integrated and then added to each other to obtain a signal that indicates the direction of movement of the laser spot. The direction of movement of the laser spot is detected according to whether the phase of the direction detecting signal leads or lags the phase of a tracking error signal.

    • An error signal detecting apparatus for an optical recording/reproducing apparatus, the error signal detecting apparatus including a photodetector to receive light reflected and diffracted by a recording medium, and a signal processor to detect an error signal by calculating a detection signal of the photodetector. The photodetector includes a plurality of light receiving areas to independently receive light of a light area in which the profile of the light changes to the opposite profile according to the tangential tilt of the recording medium. The signal processor detects a tangential tilt error signal from detection signals of the light receiving areas. Thus, a signal output from the error signal detecting apparatus does not change when a shift is generated in the objective lens or the distance between the objective lens and the disc is deviated from the on-focus position. Also, a change in the profile of the light beam according to a relative tangential tilt with respect to the objective lens of a recording medium in land/groove format can be properly detected so that an accurate tangential tilt error signal can be detected.

The track cross signal is useful as a basis of determining tracking pull-in after searching a track.
