    • An objective lens element that can suppress occurrence of an aberration is disclosed. Sawtooth-like diffraction structures having different height and cycles (pitches) are provided on an inner part R21 and an outer part R22, respectively. A curved surface M211 extending at an intermediate level of recesses and projections of the sawtooth-like diffraction structure provided on the inner part R21, and a curved surface M212 extending at an intermediate level of recesses and projections of the sawtooth-like diffraction structure provided on the outer part R22 are smoothly connected to each other. Even when wavelength of the light source and/or the environmental temperature change, a phase shift does not occur between the inner part R21 and the outer part R22, and a decrease in diffraction efficiency and occurrence of an aberration can be suppressed.

    • It is an object of the present invention to record to and reproduce different types of optical disks using light beams with different wavelengths. In an optical head device for recording to and reproducing high-density optical disks using an objective lens with a large NA, a sawtooth-shaped hologram is used for recording to and reproducing conventional optical disks such as DVDs. For blue light, a sawtooth height is the light path length 2λ, and second-order diffraction light is used. Red light generates first-order diffraction. The hologram is blazed and has convex lens function, and corrects chromatic aberration of the refractive lens. A relay lens is disposed between an infrared laser light source and the objective lens, and the light beam that is emitted from the infrared laser light source is substantially converged by the relay lens, and then, as it diverges once again, it is incident on the objective lens, which focuses the light beam into a spot on the recording surface of an optical disk after passing through an approximately 1.2 mm substrate.

    • In an embodiment, an optical pickup includes at least one light source for selectively emitting three light beams having blue, red, and infrared wavelengths, respectively, and an objective lens arranged so that each of the three light beams enters thereto. The objective lens includes a first grating, and a second grating formed in the same plane as the first grating. The first and second gratings each have phase steps arranged concentrically around a center axis of a lens in a region in which all the three light beams pass, and are different in phase step positions. The first grating diffracts the three light beams having the blue, red, and infrared wavelengths in a 2nd order, a 1st order, and the 1st order, respectively. On the other hand, the second grating diffracts the three light beams having the blue, red, and infrared wavelengths in the 1st order, the 1st order, and the 1st order, respectively. As a result, the three light beams having the blue, red, and infrared wavelengths, which have been transmitted through the first grating and the second grating, are diffracted in a 3rd order, the 2nd order, and the 2nd order, respectively.
