摘要： An apparatus for providing protection from ballistic rounds, projectiles, fragments and explosives. The apparatus includes a core, grinding layer and bonding layer. The core is shaped and configured as a structural truss of the apparatus, in which the core includes a plurality of parallel, adjacent rows and the core distributes and dissipates force impacting on the apparatus. The grinding layer is positioned on at least one side of the core facing towards potential threats, in which the grinding layer grinds rounds, projectiles, fragments or other materials impacting the apparatus, helping to dissipate the impacting material and its momentum. The bonding layer bonds the grinding layer together and the grinding layer to the core and provides an outer coating to the apparatus on a side of the apparatus facing potential threats and through which rounds, projectiles, fragments or other materials impact and penetrate the apparatus.

A ballistic panel for providing protection includes a three-dimensional core designed as a structural truss that includes a plurality of nodes and provides structural support of the ballistic panel, a ceramic grinding layer that includes a plurality of ceramic grinding media that fills in the nodes of the core, an elastomeric, self-healing outer coating that encapsulates the ceramic grinding layer and a backing affixed to a non-threat side of the ballistic panel. The core absorbs and dissipates force from projectile and explosive force impacts on the ballistic panel and the ceramic grinding layer re-directs and causes the projectiles to break apart.

Embodiments include multiple layers of fabric each including an inner core made of substantially rigid material and outer surfaces. The multiple layers of fabric are hot-pressed together to form a ballistic panel. Embodiments further include a plurality of stitches that provides an additional mechanical bond to hold the multiple layers of fabric together to improve the level of protection against ballistic threats. The ballistic panel may be cut to a size appropriate for different applications, e.g., ballistic visor for vehicle use or a briefcase insert or backpack for personal use.

The ballistic visor includes a plurality of panels. Each panel is substantially the size of a vehicle windshield sun visor and includes an outer layer of ballistic fabric that permits ballistic rounds to penetrate the ballistic visor and prevents ballistic rounds or ballistic round fragments from exiting the ballistic visor and an inner core of semi-rigid or rigid material surrounded by the outer layer of ballistic fabric and capable of stopping ballistic rounds. The ballistic panel further includes a connection between two of the plurality of panels that enables the ballistic visor to be expanded so that one of the two connected panels hangs below the other of the two connected panels. The connected ends of the two connected panels overlap.
