    • In a fire sprinkler system, flow sensors are used having strain gauges mounted on supports which project into the sprinkler pipes. When water flow occurs, the supports bend, changing the strain gauge resistance and producing a signal which can be analyzed to indicate which sprinkler heads are open. Since there are no mechanical switches, the sensor units are much smaller and cheaper than previously, and provide more information. A strain gauge can also or alternatively be located outside the pipe to detect vibration caused by flowing water. As an alternative to strain gauges, piezo film can be used, with a vibration analyzer to analyze the signal from the film to determine whether water flow is occurring and which sprinkler heads are open. A piezo film can also be placed on the pipe exterior and the signals from the two piezo films can be applied to differential inputs of a differential amplifier, to cancel signals caused by external influences such as pipe vibration. A thermistor can also be used to sense water flow, using temperature changes when the water begins to flow.

In such an apparatus the risk of leaks occurring is reduced and effective alarming of the surroundings at the beginning of the fire-extinguishing process is ensured according to the invention by the fact that the alarm device (5) comprises a pressure-actuatable switching device connected to the pipe (2) which triggers the warning signal in the event of an increase in the pressure prevailing in the pipe (2).

    • Disclosed is a fire-suppressant bottle having a discharge port and control valve arranged to discharge the bottle contents in a linear trajectory, i.e., without any abrupt directional changes. The arrangement facilitates discharge of the pressurized suppressant within a short time period, e.g., five pounds of Halon 1301 within 50 milliseconds. In one arrangement the bottle is positioned upright within a military vehicle, with the discharge port and control valve at the lower zone of the bottle side wall, such that suppressant is sprayed horizontally to suppress explosive fires generated when a projectile pierces the vehicle fuel tank. The invention is also useful in preventing the growth of deflagration fires such as may be generated in bilges, hydraulic systems, or flammable cargo.

    • An automatic fire extinguishing sprinkling system of the type permanently installed in commercial establishments and the like and which is adapted for automatic operation upon the sensing of a fire by automatic sensing devices and which includes proportionalizing valves adapted for manual operation of selected portions of the system by an individual detecting the fire previously to the activation of the automatic devices and thus manually activating the required portion of the sprinkling system to extinguish the limited fire without having to activate the entire sprinkling system which would result in excessive water damage to those areas otherwise not affected by the fire, the system including a pair of concentrically disposed shafts each having an operating handle at one end with the opposite ends connected by sprocket chains to valves of the sprinkling system such that operation of one shaft will effect activation of the entire sprinkling system whereas operation of the other shaft will effect activation of only a proportionalized section of the sprinkling system where the fire has been detected.

    • This invention relates to fire extinguishing systems and specifically pertains to a multiple valve distributor head for pressure actuated cartridges containing a fire extinguishing agent which protect a plurality of fire hazard areas through fixed pipe systems attached to the valves of the distributor head. The multiple valve distributor head permits the selective discharge of the entire contents of the cartridge through one valve into the fixed pipe fire system protecting one hazard area upon detection of a fire in that area, without unseating or opening valves leading to the fixed pipe systems of unaffected hazard areas. The multiple valve distributor head comprises a fitting for pressurized cartridges of fire extinguishing agent formed with a plurality of opposed laterally-extending bosses having openings communicating with an interior distribution cam chamber and counterboard and internally threaded at their outer ends to receive independently actuated valves which in turn are connected to fixed pipe fire systems through which the fire extinguishing agent is discharged.

    • A fire control apparatus is provided particularly for use in areas where food is prepared using fats or greases. The apparatus automatically activates upon the presence of flame or excessive heat in a control zone whereupon high volume extinguishant is flooded rapidly over the zone to extinguish the flame and rapidly reduce the heat. After a predetermined time interval or after a predetermined volume of extinguishant has been discharged, the rate of flow of extinguishant from the same source will be automatically reduced a substantial amount and will continue to be discharged over the zone for a relatively long period of time to prevent new flames from developing and to further reduce the amount of heat in the zone to below the flame auto-ignition point.
