    • An arrangement for applying longitudinally extending tapes (10) to a moving web (11) comprises a plurality of holders (17) each intended for a respective tape store (18), and a plurality of tape applicators (19) for guiding a respective tape arriving from a tape store to a location at which the tape is in contact with the web. The holders (17) and the tape applicators (19) are carried by and capable of being positioned along mutually separate beams of a beam structure (14, 15, 16) which extends transversely to the direction of web travel. The applicators (19) can be adjusted positionally in relation to an applicator-setting beam (15) which extends transversely to the direction of web movement, and can be locked to this beam in selected positions therealong. The applicator-setting beam is, in turn, carried for longitudinal movement by a stationary carrier beam (14) which extends parallel with the applicator-setting beam. The applicator-setting beam can also have graduations (30) provided along the length thereof.

    • Apparatus for manufacturing a wrapper web provided with a tear-open strip is disclosed. A web of wrapper material is fed along a generally planar guide path and two parallel incisions are made in the web to separate a narrow central strip of material therefrom. This narrow strip is raised out of the planar guide path, along which the two edge pieces on each side of the narrow strip continue to be fed. The two edge pieces are urged towards one another until mutually facing edges of the two edge pieces abut against one another below the centre of the narrow strip. The narrow strip is then guided back into the planar guide path so that it overlaps longitudinal edge portions of the two edge pieces, to which the narrow strip is adhesively or heat bonded to provide a web having a tear-off strip.The present invention relates to apparatus for manufacturing a wrapper web of viscose foil, or similar stickable or weldable wrapper material, provided with a tear-open strip.It is known to provide apparatus for cutting a tear-open strip from one edge of a web of wrapping material whilst the web is guided in a generally planar guide path. The strip after being severed from the remainder of the web is then guided out of the general plane of the web feed path and displaced laterally to overlie the remainder of the web. The strip is then heat welded to the remainder of the web to provide a tear-open strip. However, the resulting web is dependent on the effectiveness of the bond between the strip and the remainder web to effect actual tearing of the material of the remainder web, when the tear-open strip is torn off, if a package wrapped in a web provided with tear-off strip of such known construction is to be opened effectively.According to the present invention there is provided apparatus to manufacture a wrapper web provided with a tear-open strip, the apparatus comprising feeder means to feed a web of wrapper material in a given direction along a first path including a planar portion, cutter means comprising two cutter elements disposed at a predetermined spacing apart in a direction perpendicular to said given direction and adapted to make mutually parallel longitudinally extending incisions in said web of wrapper material to sever therefrom a strip having its width defined by said predetermined spacing and on each of mutually opposite side of said incisions to leave a respective web piece having a width substantially greater than that of said strip, first guide means to displace said strip out of the plane of said planar portion of said first path and to guide said strip along a second path, said second path being convergent with said planar portion of said first path downstream of said first guide means, second guide means having respective guide elements spaced apart in a direction perpendicular to said given direction at a distance substantially equal to the sum of the respective widths of said web pieces, said guide elements being operatively associated with said planar portion of said first path downstream of said first guide means to guide said web pieces into mutually abutting edge-to-edge relationship, third guide means operatively associated with said planar portion of said first path downstream of said first guide means to guide said strip into overlapping relationship with longitudinally extending and mutually next adjacent edge portions of each of said web pieces in said planar portion of said first path, and connector means to connect said strip -- when in said overlapping relationship -- to each of said edge portions.

    • An apparatus for cutting tear-off strips from a strip of material having a width equal to the length of the tear-off strip and for applying the tear-off strip to a conveyed web of packaging material is disclosed. The apparatus has one movable and one stationary straight knife for the progressive cutting of the strip, a device to which suction can be applied for transferring the cut strip along its longitudinal axis to a suction roll, the suction roll being partially covered by the continuously conveyed packaging material. The strip is conveyed to the roll and the combination passes through a welding device for welding the tear-off strip to the web of packaging material. In order to operate at higher cycle rates, the device has a suction wheel for transferring the strip, which conveys the strip to the suction roll, the suction wheel being virtually motionless at the pick up position of the strip and being accelerated to the transfer point of the suction roll until the speeds of the suction wheel and roll are roughly the same.

    • A teartape for packaging materials, and particularly such materials based on polyolefin films, includes a base film coated with a pressure sensitive adhesive composition. The teartape is affixed to the packaging material by the adhesive composition. This avoids the problem of distortion which can occur when affixing conventional teartapes to such packaging materials by means of hot melt wax compositions. The teartape is applied to moving packaging material by controlling the speed of the teartape in accordance with the speed of the packaging material so as to reduce tension imbalance. The speed of the teartape may be controlled in dependence upon the tension in the teartape. This can be achieved by supplying the teartape from a dispenser having a brake means (4,5) and a drive means (10,11,12) for regulating the speed of the teartape in dependence on the tension in the teartape.

    • The invention relates to a method of and an apparatus for producing beverage containers.For making beverage containers having a piercable through-hole for a straw in their front sheeting, which is sealed on the inside of the front sheeting by means of a closure strip, a piercing hole is formed in a front side sheeting web conveyed in conveying direction, whereafter a closure sheeting web is fed in conveying direction to the front side sheeting web and is then sealed around the piercing hole to the inside of the front side sheeting web. Thereafter, the front side sheeting web and the rear side sheeting web are welded together at least in part along the lateral edges of the beverage container to be produced, with the closure sheeting web being included therein.
