    • An apparatus for transporting several files of spaced apart paper stacks has several neighboring transporting units, one for each file and each having a frame mounting front and rear shafts for three toothed pulleys cooperating with toothed belts whose outwardly extending lobes can advance and/or guide stacks during movement along the upper side of a platform. The lobes of the median belt in each frame are engaged by the front edge faces of the stacks, and the lobes of the outer belts in each frame engage the trailing edge faces of the stacks on the respective transporting unit. Two gears are rotatably mounted on each rear shaft to respectively drive a pulley for one of the outer belts and a pulley for the median belt in the respective transporting unit. Such gears mesh with second gears which are mounted in the respective frame, and with driver gears which are mounted on shafts receiving torque from a stepping motor. At least one of the frames is adjustable in the housing of the apparatus at right angles to the direction of transport of the stacks, and the axial length of the driver gears is such that these driver gears remain in mesh with the second gears of the one unit in each position of adjustment of the frame of the one unit with reference to the housing.

    • The invention pertains to a device for gathering sheets (3) with feeder stations (15) that are arranged in a row and consist of a magazine (20) for respectively accommodating a stack (4) of identical sheets, a separating device (50) that tilts an exposed edge region (3b) of the respective bottom sheet away from the stack (4) and a transport device (30) that withdraws the sheet from the stack parallel to the longitudinal direction of the edge region, and with a collecting conveyor (10) that features pushers (13) for the gathered stacks (2). In order to achieve a high processing speed, the invention proposes that the separating device (50) features at least one suction element (51) for tilting away at least one corner of the sheet (3), and that the transport device for withdrawing the sheet (3) is formed by a traction means conveyor (30) with individually actuated grippers (32) that are anchored on revolving traction means (31) within certain distances from one another and at least two of which take hold of the exposed edge region (3b), wherein the traction means conveyor (30) is inclined toward the collecting conveyor (10) in order to deposit the withdrawn sheet (3) on the stack (2) being formed directly in front of the pusher (13) of the collecting conveyor (10). The invention makes it possible to reliably decollate head-folded signatures if the suction element (51) is arranged on the upstream corner of the stack (4).

    • In a high speed mail sorting machine, a mechanism for feeding envelopes one at a time to a pickoff device such as a vacuum belt system. The envelopes are loaded onto a floor panel which inclines from side to side. A chain conveyor moves the envelope supply along the floor panel with each envelope having its lower edge traveling on the floor and one side edge travelling along an inclined side panel. The envelopes are successively discharged from the inclined floor onto a conveyor belt which is driven transversely to the floor and at a greater speed than the chain conveyor. The speed difference causes the envelopes to spread out as they travel downstream. The conveyor belt loads the envelopes onto a driven roller having a spiral groove which feeds the individual envelopes flatly against the vacuum belts of the envelope pickoff device.
