摘要： A fibrous insulation product with improved thermal resistance and method of making it are provided. A plurality of base fibers (e.g. glass) are formed into an insulation product, which may be bindered or unbonded. At least one infrared opacifying agent, such as soot, carbon black or graphite, is applied to the fibrous insulation product such that the base fibers are substantially uniformly coated with opacifying agent. The opacifying agent may be applied, for example, from a fluid suspension or by pulling the fiber through a sooty flame. When opacifying agent applied via a suspension and a binder is desired, it is preferable to avoid binder dispersions that can dislocate the opacifying agent. Alternative binder applications may include co-mingling of base fibers with binder fibers, or other physical or mechanical distributions.

The apparatus may also include a doped silica cap that may be fused to the optical fiber such that the surface of the optical fiber may be disposed within a cavity defined by the doped silica cap.

摘要： An alkali-metal-doped core optical fiber having high hydrogen resistance and a method for manufacturing such an optical fiber are provided. A method for manufacturing a deuterium-treated optical fiber according to the present invention includes a preform-forming step of forming a silica glass optical fiber preform having a core doped with an alkali metal element, a drawing step of drawing the optical fiber preform to form an optical fiber, and an exposing step of exposing the optical fiber to a deuterium gas atmosphere. Alkali-metal-doped core optical fibers can be manufactured by using this method. In the exposing step, the optical fiber is exposed to an atmosphere containing deuterium gas at a temperature of 20° C. or more under conditions where (deuterium gas partial pressure)×(exposure time) is 50 kPa·hour or more.

In some fiber lasers and amplifiers having large cores problems exist related to energy being generated at multiple-modes (i.e., polygamy), and of mode hopping (i.e., promiscuity) due to limited control of energy levels and fluctuations. The problems of multiple-modes and mode hopping result from the use of large-diameter waveguides, and are addressed by the invention. This is especially true in lasers using large amounts of energy (i.e., lasers in the one-megawatt or more range). By using multiple small waveguides in parallel, large amounts of energy can be passed through a laser, but with better control such that the aforementioned problems can be reduced. An additional advantage is that the polarization of the light can be maintained better than by using a single fiber core.

摘要： Apparatus, systems and methods for monitoring and controlling the amount of moisture introduced into the forming hood area in the manufacture of mineral fiber insulation products. Moisture from coolant liquids, binder dispersions and binder diluents are all introduced deliberately into a forming hood; ambient moisture and water from combustion are additional sources. A series of global variable control valves, one for each fluid system; as well as individual variable control valves for each fiberizing unit are provided with associated meters. Sensors monitor fibrous pack conditions and ambient conditions and provide inputs to the valve control system. A specific 3-ring liquid dispensing system is also disclosed.

摘要： Method and apparatus for producing chopped rock fibers, such as basalt. A furnace is preferably used to melt rocks, and a drawing assembly is used to draw the melted rocks into fibers. Prior to chopping the fibers to selected lengths, a preconditioning assembly operates to induce mechanical defects in the drawn fibers. Preferably, the preconditioning assembly comprises a shock cooling stage and/or a fiber twisting stage. The shock cooling stage significantly reduces the temperature of the drawn fibers, such as by the application of a stream of fluid such as water or steam to the drawn fibers. Additionally or alternatively, the shock cooling stage preferably comprises a liquid coolant bath through which the drawn fibers pass. The fiber twisting stage preferably utilizes a twisting assembly such as a roller to induce a torsional force upon the drawn fibers to continuously twist the fibers about an axis thereof.
