摘要： Ionic mesogenic compounds of formula (I) can be used to form liquid crystal displays, such as ferroelectric liquid crystal displays, having enhanced anti-image sticking properties. The mesogenic compounds may contain a cationic group such as an ammonium or phosphonium group bonded to an alkyl chain that is terminally bonded to a para-substituted pyrimidyl benzene moiety. The counterion can be an organic or inorganic anion. The compounds can be used either as dopants in art ferroelectric liquid crystal compositions to reduce image sticking, or can be used as the primary or predominant component of a liquid crystal display system. Additional compounds, devices, and methods are disclosed.

摘要： A ferroelectric liquid crystal device includes a pair of substrates which has electrodes formed in an opposing spatial relation to each other. At least one of the electrodes is optically transparent. A parallel aligned, obliquely evaporated film is formed on each electrode. The paired substrates are sealed to provide a cell. A ferroelectric liquid crystal composition to which an ionic substance having a great mobility is added is placed in the cell to obtain the liquid crystal device. The addition of the ionic substance results in a low switching threshold voltage, a high response speed and good memory reproducibility. When the device is applied with an AC electric field prior to driving, display contrast is significantly improved.

摘要： The present invention provides gels, solutions, films, membranes, compositions, and other materials containing polymerized and/or non-polymerized room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs). These materials are useful in catalysis, gas separation and as antistatic agents. The RTILs are preferably imidazolium-based RTILs which are optionally substituted, such as with one or more hydroxyl groups. Optionally, the materials of the present invention are composite materials comprising both polymerized and non-polymerized RTILs. The RTIL polymer is formed from polymerized RTIL cations typically synthesized as monomers and polymerized in the presence of the non-polymerized RTIL cations to provide a solid composite material. The non-polymerized RTIL cations are not covalently bound to the cationic polymer but remain as free cations within the composite material able to associate with charged subunits of the polymer. These composite materials are useful in catalysis, gas separation, and antistatic applications.

The method includes steps of depositing a mixed solution including an ionic liquid and a polymerizable material on a substrate; separating positive ions from negative ions in the ionic liquid, so that the polymerizable material is aligned; polymerizing the aligned polymerizable material, so that an aligned first thin film is obtained after cured; and depositing liquid crystal molecules on the first thin film, and polymerizing the liquid crystal molecules to form a second thin film, wherein the second thin film is aligned in a way that matches with the first thin film, and the first thin film and the second thin film constituent the anisotropic organic thin film.
