    • A device is known for heat treatment of permeable webs of goods with a housing in which at least one screen roller is mounted and a pumping device is associated endwise with the roller, said pumping device drawing a processing medium in the formal of a vapor and/or gas out of the screen roller, with the through-flow area of the roller, in other words the working width of the screen roller, being capable of being determined by a width-adjusting device on the screen roller. A screen roller of this kind is improved according to the invention ifa) at least in the area covered by the web of goods, it has two coaxially mounted permeable screen roller jackets located with a distance between them,b) a width-adjusting device is provided between the outer and inner screen roller jackets, said devicec) being adjustable by a spindle on the axis of the screen roller, andd) the inner screen roller jacket is made permeable only in the area that corresponds to the minimum working width of the roller.A design of this kind is suitable for large differences in working width and also for smaller screen roller diameters without resulting in non-uniform processing over the working width.

    • Disclosed is a continuous process of non-compressively and uniformly applying a liquid saturant throughout a permeable sheet. The process includes the steps of: 1) providing a continuously advancing permeable sheet having a first surface and a second surface, 2) depositing a substantially laminar flowing curtain of a liquid saturant generally across and onto the first surface of the continuously advancing permeable sheet, 3) applying a vacuum to the second surface of the continuously advancing permeable sheet, and 4) drawing a substantial portion of the liquid saturant through the permeable sheet to generate a substantially uniform distribution of liquid saturant throughout the permeable sheet. The process may also include the step of drying the liquid saturated permeable sheet. The dry bulk of the liquid saturant treated permeable sheet may be within about 15 percent of the dry bulk of an identical untreated permeable sheet. Also disclosed is a non-compressively and uniformly liquid saturant treated permeable sheet and an apparatus for non-compressively and uniformly applying a liquid saturant throughout a permeable sheet.

    • An improved washer for removing impurities or other substances from a porous mat disposed over a vacuum head. As disclosed, in connection with an industrial paper making process, the porous mat is paper pulp and an elongate chamber, disposed axially above the drum, has a slot along its bottom with resilient downwardly extending skirts disposed around the edges of the slot. Water under pressure in the chamber is directed downward, and into the pulp mat. The resilient skirts prevent the wash water from flowing tangentially with respect to the mat so that the flow of water into the mat is essentially perpendicular to the mat. The chemicals within the mat are positively displaced by relatively clean wash water.

    • A method and associated apparatus are provided for scouring knit fabrics such as tricots the edge of which tend to curl. The web of material is fed onto a pair of running pin chains which engage the marginal edges of the material and carry it in a flat condition through a scouring station. Scouring liquid is delivered over the web by pressure sprays as well as sheets of liquid to remove oils and dirt. The pin chains then carry the web over a vacuum slot which removes most of the liquid from the center portion of the web. High pressure air jets are located along the path of travel of the web and positioned to direct high pressure air jets against the web edges to remove moisture therefrom. The web is then carried through a drying chamber using heated air and vapor mixture. Chemicals of various types can be applied with a high degree of penetration by the use of one or more suction boxes located at or after a chemical application station.
