    • A method and apparatus is provided for controlling the distribution of color on a web of textile material in a textile dyeing process. The apparatus includes a color sensor for sensing a selected color characteristic of the textile web, such as, for example, the distribution of color, at a sensing location downstream of a nip device of a textile padding machine. The nip device removes excess dye liquor from the textile web to dispose the textile web at an initial moisture content as it exits the textile padding machine. The amount of the dye liquor removal through the nip operation is controlled in response to the color characteristic sensed by the color sensor so that the textile web is disposed at an initial moisture content upon exiting the textile padding machine which facilitates a desired color distribution when the textile web is subsequently dried.

    • In a size applicator in which size is circulated between a reservoir tank and an applicator tank from which the size overflows back into the reservoir tank, the squeezing pressure applied to the traveling textile substrate is regulated in response to a sensing of the speed of the substrate. A secondary regulation is applied as a function of sensing of the volume of the size being in comparison with the substrate speed. This sensing of the volume of the size being consumed is accomplished by a hydrostatic sensor in the reservoir tank, the output of which sensing is applied to a microprocessor that compares the signal from the size level sensor with the signal from the tachometer that senses the substrate speed, and upon the comparison exceeding a predetermined tolerance, a further regulation is applied to the piston-cylinder mechanisms that control the squeezing pressure between squeeze rollers and between an emersion roller and the bottom squeeze roller.

    • The size applicator includes first and second spaced-apart squeeze rolls supported for rotation on a common horizontal axis and having their lower peripheral surface portions at least partially submerged in size solution contained in an open top pan. A single combination immersion and squeeze roll is positioned between the first and second squeeze rolls and on a common horizontal azis with said first and second squeeze rolls. The lower peripheral surface of the combination immersion and squeeze roll is also at least partially submerged in the size solution and pressure engagement is applied between the combination roll and the first and second squeeze rolls to form a pair of yarn squeezing nips therebetween. The sheet of textile yarns is directed into the size applicator and through the nip of the first squeeze roll with the combination roll, beneath the combination roll, and through the nip of the combination roll with the second squeeze roll to provide a pair of successive squeezing actions on the sheet of textile yarns passing through the size applicator.
