    • A different-material joint for welding is free from leakage even in extremely low-temperature environments and has high bonding properties in which an aluminum alloy has been disposed at one outermost end therefore and a stainless steel or steel has been disposed at the other outermost end thereof. The different-material joint according to the present invention comprises an aluminum alloy as one outermost end therefore, a stainless steel or steel as the other outermost end thereof, and two or more metals selected from the group consisting of pure aluminum, nickel, nickel alloys, titanium, titanium alloys, copper, copper alloys, and silver as interlayer materials disposed between the aluminum alloy and the stainless steel or steel. The different-material joint thus includes four or more clad material layers, and is characterized in that all of the bonding interfaces between the layers are wavy interfaces having a wave height of 1 mm or less.

    • A method for making a riser component includes: positioning a coupler adjacent and end of a tube such that a region of the coupler forms an interface with the tube's end, wherein the region includes a material (in some embodiments an aluminum alloy), and the tube's end includes a groove and another material (in some embodiments a steel alloy) that is different than the region's material; heating the region of the coupler to increase the region's malleability; and exerting pressure on the region of the coupler to plastically deform the region to insert some of the region's material into the groove in the tube's end. By fixing the coupler to the tube in this manner, the coupler may be strongly secured to the tube, and thus able to withstand high, dynamic loads frequently experienced in service. Also, the material of the coupler may be different than the material of the tube, and thus the material of the coupler may be lighter than the material of the tube. This allows one to design a riser component that is lighter than a conventional steel riser component having a steel tube and steel flanges, but that can withstand the high, dynamic loads frequently experienced in service.

    • An end-to-end tubular joint includes first locking pieces cut from the first tube and second locking pieces cut from the second tube, where the cuts have radial cut faces on the axially aligned cuts. The first and second locking pieces are interlocked with lateral extensions of the respective locking pieces bearing against one another and the radial cut surfaces distributed circumferentially around the joint so as to constrain relative movement between the parts. The first locking pieces are welded to the first tube and the second locking pieces are welded to the second tube to form a tube joint. An alternative forms cutouts in the first tube and fits locking pieces into the cutouts that are welded to a second member, such as a second tube or cylinder that fits into the first tube so as to form the tube joint.
