    • The invention relates to a heating device.A first object of the invention is to embody a heating device with a combustion space having at least one free side, such as an open hearth, or optionally a free-standing heater, such that it possesses a high yield. Another object is the embodying of this heating device such that in addition to use as a free-standing heater it can also be used as insert system for an open hearth. These objects are realized with a heating device characterized by a tilted, substantially U-shaped heat exchanger open to the front for heating air at the fireplace. This heat exchanger being provided with a lower heat exchanger part onto which can be laid solid fuel. For example, a number of pipes laid adjacent to one another, which lower part connects onto a standing heat exchanger part.     • Forced air space heating fireplace having a metal casing defining a combustion chamber with an opening facing a room to be heated. Air flow tubes are provided beneath the floor of the combustion chamber and at the top, the air flow tubes being interconnected by lateral air flow tubes then lying outside the casing. The interconnection is such that the tubes form a continuous air flow path having an air inlet connected to a blower, which draws fresh air from outside the room to be heated, and two air outlets disposed laterally of the casing and opening into the room to be heated. In one form, the lateral flow tubes are encased in an insulating brick construction. In an other alternative, they may be contained in a jacket surrounding the casing and also including the top air flow tubes.

    • A fireplace heat exchanger which may be used in conjunction with a fireplace screen, such as a glass screen. The heat exchanger comprises a lower header fed by a blower drawing in room air and delivering this air to a plurality of C-shaped tubes in the fireplace capable of supporting logs. These tubes deliver the air to an upper header, from which the air is fed downwardly by a central C-shaped tube to a room delivery chamber below the lower header. The delivery chamber is part of a lower support on which a glass or other fireplace screen may be placed. The air is heated during both its upward and downward travel and is delivered at floor level.

    • A high efficiency heat return fireplace unit is provided which includes an enclosure having outer and inner housings. The inner housing defines a fire box which communicates with the atmosphere through a suitable flue-chimney structure. The inner housing is spaced from the outer housing so as to define a heat chamber about the fire box. At least the bottom wall of the inner housing has an undulating shape in cross section so that the bottom wall defines a series of heat pipes along the bottom of the fire box. The heat pipes communicate with the heat chamber. A plurality of hot air returns extend depthwise along the top of the fire box. The hot air returns also communicate with the heat chamber and return heated air to the room in which the fireplace is located. In the preferred embodiment, the side walls of the inner enclosure also have an undulating shape in cross section so that a large surface area is available for heat transfer between the fire box and the heat chamber, thereby greatly increasing the heat transfer efficiency of the fireplace.
