摘要： A controller area network (CAN) comprising a plurality of CAN nodes that communicate via a CAN bus that comprises a fiber optical network. The fiber optical network uses a single fiber and a single wavelength for transmit and receive, and comprises a passive reflective optical star. The reflective optical star comprises an optical mixing rod having a mirror at one end. The other end of the reflective optical star is optically coupled to the transmitters and receivers of a plurality of optical-electrical media converters by way of respective high-isolation optical Y-couplers. Each CAN node produces electrical signals (in accordance with the CAN message-based protocol) which are converted into optical pulses that are broadcast to the fiber optical network. Those optical pulses are then reflected back to all CAN nodes by the reflective optical star.

摘要： An optical receiver includes a cascade of optical filtering elements, each of which selects spectral components from incoming optical signals at a wavelengths aligned to filter passbands. The selected spectral components may be optically combined to form k pairs of intermediary signals, where k=log2(M). By comparing the k pairs of intermediary signals, k bits of a digital signal representing the incident signal may be generated. The filtering elements may be configured to perform demultiplexing and demodulation simultaneously, increasing functionality and reducing excess losses. The filtering elements may also be tuned so that the optical receiver may be reconfigured to accommodate different combinations of wavelengths and modulation formats, such as wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) on off keying (OOK), M-ary orthogonal formats including frequency shift keying (FSK) and pulse position modulation (PPM), differential phase shift keying, and hybrid combinations—providing rate and format flexibility and WDM scalability.

摘要： The multiple channel fiber optic rotary joint of this invention can transmit an increased number of optical signals simultaneously through the de-rotating mechanism without increasing the size of the de-rotating mechanism. It also allows for the recapturing of the signals with relative ease. This is accomplished through the use of an optical condenser and/or an optical expander that reduces or expands the overall all beam structure without significantly altering the relative structure. The expanders and condensers are inverse structures in that if an optical signal is condensed when passing from right to light through the condenser it is expanded when passing left to right through the same condenser.
