    • A transfer device includes a power supply control unit, a direct-current (DC) power supply, an alternating-current (AC) power supply, and a transfer unit. The power supply control unit controls a first control signal for controlling a DC voltage and a second control signal for controlling an AC voltage based on a condition relating to image formation. The DC power supply outputs the DC voltage based on the first control signal. The AC power supply selectively outputs, with a particular waveform, either of the DC voltage output from the DC power supply or a superimposed voltage obtained by superimposing the AC voltage determined based on the second control signal on the DC voltage output from the DC power supply. The transfer unit transfers a developer onto a sheet using a voltage output from the AC power supply.

    • An image forming apparatus includes image carriers that carry toner images; an intermediate transfer body that is brought into contact with the image carriers to carry the images before transferring them to a recording material; first transfer devices that include first transfer members and form first-transfer electric fields for transferring the images on the image carriers to the intermediate transfer body; a second transfer device that includes a second transfer member and forms a second-transfer electric field for transferring the images transferred to the intermediate transfer body to the recording material; and an adjusting device that adjusts an electric field to be formed in a second transfer area to a cleaning electric field, which is of the same polarity as and a lower intensity than the second-transfer electric field, when the images on the intermediate transfer body passes through the second transfer area without a recording material passing therethrough.

    • An image forming apparatus includes: an image bearing member; an image forming portion; an intermediary transfer member; a transfer member; an executing portion capable of executing a first mode in which a transfer voltage based on a current detected when a predetermined voltage is applied to the transfer member is applied to the transfer member and capable of executing a second mode in which a transfer voltage is applied to the transfer member to provide a predetermined constant-current; and a controller enabling transition between a stand-by state where the image formation is enabled and a sleep state less than in power consumption than the stand-by state. The controller executes the first mode in a job after main switch actuation and before the transition to the sleep state, and executes the second mode in an initial job after the transition from the sleep state to the stand-by state.
