    • A safety controller for controlling an automated installation in accordance with a user program has a control unit receiving a plurality of control input signals from a plurality of sensors. The control unit produces a plurality of control output signals on the basis of the control input signals in accordance with a user program. The control output signals drive actuators in order to adopt one of a plurality of installation states of the automated installation. An installation diagnosis evaluation unit produces a number of installation state signals representing which one of the plurality of installation states is existent at a defined moment of time. In addition, a system diagnosis evaluation unit produces a number of system state signals, with each system state signal representing one from a plurality of operational system states of the controller system, which is formed by the control unit and its connected sensors and actuators, at the defined moment of time. A diagnosis report unit produces a number of diagnosis signals depending on the installation state signals, depending on the system state signals, and depending on predefined associations between said installation states and said operational system states. The diagnosis signals represent a number of diagnosis reports which are a result of a combination of both the installation states and associated operational system states. A display unit displays the diagnosis reports in response to the diagnosis signals.

    • A configurable control system for operating an industrial system in a reliable, safety-enhanced manner, and method of implementing such a system in any of a variety of particular industrial systems of a given class, are disclosed. The method includes storing, onto a controller of a particular industrial system, a master program capable of being used to operate a generalized industrial system having a maximum number of safety subsystems of a given type, where the particular industrial system falls within a class defined by the generalized system. The method also includes receiving a configuration input indicative of an absence/presence of a safety subsystem of the first type; validating the input; automatically configuring the master program to arrive at a configured program capable of operating the particular industrial system; and activating the controller for operation according to the configured program, which can include activating visualization or annunciation mechanisms representing the configured system.

    • An improved electronic controller for an automobile power seat system is disclosed. The electronic controller features a microcomputer which receives command signals from a first and second group of operator actuable switches, present position signals from a monitoring circuit, and stored position signals from a memory circuit for generating control signals for directing a motive power means to adjust the position of an automobile seat. The monitoring circuit includes transducer means for sensing the current draw from the d.c. power source, and differentiating means connected to the transducer means for generating a pulse concomitantly with each commutation of the motor from the motive power means. These pulse position signals are sent to the microcomputer and then counted by an internal timer for determining the present position of the automotive seat. These pulse position signals are used to determine a "stall" condition which occurs when the rack mechanism has encountered a mechanical stop, such as when the seat reaches its full forward position. The time between these pulses is monitored and a stall condition is determined when the time between these pulses exceeds a predetermined period.
