    • The disclosed aviation navigation instrument is a flight computer for solving wind triangle problems by moving plots of crosswind and crosstrack component speeds to balance drift with crosswind. The instrument incorporates a base 50 which provides an indication of direction and various plates movable about the direction axis, the plates being transparent so the operator may read and compare the plots marked on the plates. Wind plate 40 is marked with a number of crosswind plots that indicate the crosswind component of given wind speeds over the full range of directions. Heading plate 20 is marked with a number of crosstrack plots that indicate crosstrack component of a given airspeed over a range of directions. Track plate 30 is marked with effective airspeed plots that indicate the effective airspeed for given airspeeds over a range of directions. The various plates incorporate indications of each plot's origin, and scales for reading opposing plots.

    • A device for determining angle relationships of or between planes, such as in geological structures, having a first member having on a planar surface thereof a family of concentric circles indicative of angles from the range 0.degree. to 90.degree., the circles each being indicative of an angle that is the complement of the half-angle of a respective one of a family of notional right circular cones of equal height based on the surface concentrically of the circles and having a diameter corresponding to that of its circle; and means mounted on and extending across the surface, the means being rotatable with respect to the circles to permit correlation between (a) the angle of inclination of a plane in one direction as indicated by a circle and (b) the inclination of that plane in another direction, or another direction in which a particular inclination of the plane occurs.

    • A mechanical computer of the circular slide rule type is described, which will permit a pilot to utilize a nagivational technique known as area navigation (RNAV). Scales are provided which permit the bearing angle of the desired course line and the azimuth of a line extending between a given point on the course line and a reference point to be added. This produces the angle of intercept between the latter two lines. A further scale is provided which is calibrated in logarithmic fashion and on which the sine of the aforementioned angle of intercept is inscribed. An additional scale containing distance data for the distance between the reference point and the given point on the course line in logarithmic increments is indexed with the scale having the sine of the angle of intercept thereon to provide a result which is the product of the aforementioned distance and the sine of the angle of intercept. A tab placed adjacent the angle of intercept on the sine scale rotates a plate to effectively program the computer to the constant derived in the aforementioned manner. A scale corresponding to the desired course line is rotated beneath a window on the aforementioned plate to yield bearings to and from the reference point. A window in the disc having the course scale thereon will appear over a scale yielding the distance to the reference point.

    • A calculating device, e.g., a slide rule, with cooperating logarithmic scales on which many constants are identified and readily located for employment in operations such as unit conversions, for example, from the English system to the metric system. A pair of special indices, one member thereof on each of the cooperating scales, is provided for each constant and one member of the pair is located arbitrarily on its scale. The arbitrarily located special indices may be conveniently arranged in groups, each group appropriate to a particular class of conversions, i.e., area, volume, etc.
